Combo question from a noob that doesn't own a Brug yet...

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi Brugmaniacs!

I want to add a Brugmansia to my plant collection, and I really like the "Melon Kisses" variety I found in the PlantFiles. The delicate peachy orange pink of that one is what's got me, to co-ordinate with the plant I want to combo it with...

Now here's my weirdo question, since my "research" (wikipedia) described Brugs as shrubs or small trees, are they tough enough to share a container with a climber vine like Dutchman's Pipe Gigantea? They both have almost the exact same care requirements, so it seems like it would be a good combo. But, since they can both get super huge - maybe they shouldn't share the same pot, but could I have the Brug in a big container, and then set a smaller container of the Dutch Pipe either next to the Brug base or on a stake hanger next to it? Basically, I want the Pipe to climb on the Brug... but I don't want to end up strangling the Brug. Would careful pruning of the Pipe be enough to keep it in check?

I just think the peach bells and the purple pipes would look so daggone pretty hanging together. I've got a lead on where to pick up a Pipe in a couple weeks. Which leads me to ask,

Does anyone have the "Melon Kisses" Brugmansia to share? Or any others that are pale/light colored orange/peach?

Thanks!
Rose

Brugs in pots don't get super huge. Grown in the ground, they can get fairly tall in a single season, but given the freezing weather you have been getting these last two winter, they may not attain the height anywhere you are thinking about. Additionally, Brugs produce huge root balls and need to be fertilized with a complete fertilizer low in phosphates at least once a week or so. During summer, they may need to be watered on a daily basis. Chances are that you would get a lot of leaves on your dutchman's pipe at the expense of flowers. I wouldn't put the two anywhere near each other. Trail the vine up a trellis or up dead branches inserted into the pot.

You might want to contact the person who added the photos to the PlantFiles to see if she still has it. I believe there is a forum for trades. You might try there also. Someone on Facebook's Plants Exhange might have cuttings. I hope you find it. It is a beautiful looking bloom.

Thanks for the advice, imzadi & bettydee! I won't put the two together. I'll keep looking for a peach colored Brug, and get the Pipe - but I'll get something else for the Pipe to climb on.

I grow moonvines and morning glories up my brugs. If the MGs get too wild I just cut them back a little. I haven't had a problem with growing vines up my brugs.

Can't wait to see what your final plan looks like!

Looks like finding the orange brugmansia I want is going to be hard... The independent garden center nearby just got some in, but they were all yellow. I asked if they can get other colors, but they said that's they're basically at the "mercy" of whatever the growers grow, and all their supplier gets is yellow ones.

Did you try Country gardens?

Hi IMCANADIAN,

Do you have a link to the Country Gardens company website? I Googled Country Gardens and got results, but didn't see one where they sold plants...

Thanks!

I dont think we are allowed to,I will pm it to you.

We're totally allowed to post links on how to find the plants we're looking for, or information to help members in our posts! The forums here on DG are NOT the dictatorships you might find elsewhere. Thanks so much for the link, IMCANADIAN! Even though they didn't specifically have "Melon Kisses", Country Garden has loads of lovelies to choose from - and I'm getting one! I picked the Morgansonne orange. :)

Here's the link IMCANADIAN so thoughtfully d-mailed to me...
