It's a potato masher. What do YOU use it for?

Uh, no... But that's a thought!

you use it to scratch your back AND make depressions in the soil to sow your seeds.

I think Herbie's got it! "make depressions in the soil"

Ok. 5 replies! Here goes:
So, I've got all my stuff out, ready to start sowing seeds. And, I've got this humongous bag of dry seedling starter mix that I've got to get wet to put in the seedling trays. I'm measuring 4 cups of dry mix at a time into a kittie litter bucket sitting in the sink so I can wet this dust with the warm water from the sprayer. And then I'm squeezing this mush through my hands over and over to get it "damp sponge" wet. And my hands are aching and I'm thinking, "there's got to be a better way to get this mix mashed and damp than squeezing it with my hands ..."

And the light bulb went on, and I reached for that potting mix masher and put it to the test! Same four cups of mix sprinkled with warm water but now mash, mash, mash! And, it's working crazy good, and crazy fast! Matter of fact, the masher not only wets the mix, it "fluffs" it, too!

So, there you have it. Try it, and let me know if it doesn't make the task much easier!

Hugs! ^^_^^ (Me, doing the mash)

What a great idea! Hmmm... I don't have a masher 'cause I don't eat white potatoes :(

Dollar Store. Mine is a sturdy metal one, but I think a plastic one would do just as good a job. I was impressed with how fluffy the mix was getting as I was mashing and mixing. And, I had much better control over how moist the mix was since the mashing action forced the water into all those little nooks and crannies. I only had to add a little water at a time.

And the best part was that I saved my hands for playing the piano!

^^_^^(Clapping hands that don't hurt from having to squeeze, squeeze, squeeze seedling mix to get it wet!)

Great idea Linda. ☺

IO1, thanks!

HoneybeeNC, feel free to cut and paste to the TIPS page!

Ok. Who's got next?

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

gymgirl - let me say this. i have been starting seeds for a long time. when i get my seed starting mix i put it into a 6 quart pot and add warm water to it i add enough water to that the mix is more wet than moist and then i leave it over night. when i get up in the morning i take a table fork and give in a couple of turns into the mix and then it's ready to go.

i try to make things easier and i find that is all i have to do to get the soil ready for the seeds.

Well, Just give that man the EZ button!

I don't think you can get easier than that!
