Well luckily they took it off the table here .. just rain now.

X, if you don't calm down and quit having hissy fits, somebody is going to have to back into the past and break out the smelling salts. A sure fire remedy.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Lol .. for some reason, this winter has been very hard on me .. probably because I turned 60 a few weeks ago.

If accuweather meteorologist Joe Bastardi is correct, we're all going to need smelling salts. He's predicting a major cool down for the next 20 - 30 years, based largely upon reoccuring, cooling Pacific la ninas combined with much less than predicted solar activity. I don't know how to provide links, but if you google accuweather and your town, you can scroll down to his videos. He's talking about winters similar to those in the late 1700's and early 1800's. (Think VaIley Forge!) If he's correct, we may be going back to the old climate zone map or worse. I wonder what the summers were like back then - just desperately looking for a silver lining....

We still have snow on the ground in our shady spots in Atlanta. We've not been up to our place in N. GA. They are predicting more for us on Monday and Tuesday. maybe if smelling salts can be poured on our driveway it will be fine but I don't want to spend another five days in the house. truthfully there are plenty of things I could (should) accomplish if I were stuck in the house...I just don't want to be there.

So good to hear from you, Laurel! It was bad here in Sumter (crusty 3") , but nothing compared to Atlanta. Hope your orchids are faring well, and you're back at the ranch soon.

Well, in an attempt to see the bright side of things .. maybe I'll be able to grow peonies in the next couple of years.

Thanks, Donna. The orchids are great. You can check my bloomers in that forum. :>) It's a cottage on the side of a mountain and not a ranch that keeps us otherwise occupied. Peony growing may be in our future. While we're looking for bright sides in the recent and near weather reports, and always the optimist, maybe we should consider lilacs as well.

Well snow/rain is back on the table for this afternoon .. I was awakened at 5am this morning by my computer's ups beeping as the power had gone off .. of course the first thing I checked was the temperature in the greenhouse which was 49 degrees inside and 40 degrees outside - power came back on an hour later and I went back to bed .. now as I write this its 31 degrees outside.

Grrrrrrrrr

Cold here in New Bern. 32 degrees at dog-walking time.

slush slush slush hope it missed everyone else. # 4 is the most we have gotten in snow. Most of our county did not get any of #3 which was a mystery to me and I thought hubby was joking when he said our house yard had snow as it never did snow where I work.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Well we dodged the bullet here .. whew!

Conway, SC

Hissy fits just didn't cover the bordem problem of not being able to get in my yard and play in the dirt.
In two day I have: 1. crocheted a 72"x6" scarf that I probably will never wear.
2. Cooked a pot full of shrimp, chicken and Sausage gumbo that would feed 15 people---there's just me and hubbie, so I call the
neighbors.

What are you doing, other than having hissy fits, while you wait for Spring ?

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I started planting seeds last Friday, already one of my Black Currant Swirl Datura has popped up which was utterly amazing since the seed was over 5 years old! I'll be starting seeds now on a weekly basis.

I also cleaned out the ginger bed this weekend and it looks grim .. I'm thinking I've probably lost all of my Costas & Curcuma and most of the Hedychium that are in the ground. I'm kicking myself for not potting up a few of each for the greenhouse.

Miraculously, my ginger rhizomes are still firm. Maybe it's because we're in a drought around here, plus all of my gingers are in buried containers, making them extra dry. A few years ago, I planted curcumas w/o vole protection and none of them survived the winter. Apparently my voles like a little ginger in their diet. Most of my protected bananas are still firm at the base, including marginal gran nains, orinoco's, and a couple others whose names I can't remember. This will be another interesting spring to assess what survived and what bit the dust. With sunny skies and temps in the low 60's for the next week, it's finally going to feel more spring like. (Still dreading summer!)
