cushings in cats

Does anyone have any experience with chshing's in cats? A DF's Maine Coon has Cushing's as a preliminary dx. It's an 11 yo male. At this point he is eating everything is sight and his coat is rough and ratty looking and his belly is quite large. She is wondering what his live will be like without tx. Or for that matter, with tx. The vet has no experience with this in cats and has little info to offer her. Any experience, good or bad would greatly help her deal with this.
