Much to my dismay, I've noticed some area motels are having "professionals" trim their pindos so severely that it's killing them. It's sad to see 40 - 50 year old specimens dying. Now I'm seeing other businesses cutting off most of their pindo fronds as well. And they're doing this in mid Nov! Just wondering if this crime is happening in other SC towns.

wonder what Landscape service did that? you should go tell the owners do they realize now with no fronds the Palm can't photosynthesize - no photo, no food - no food=dead of course they'll be clueless and just pay to have more installed.
It's really sad to see these palms dying at the hands of "professionals" who obviously know nothing about palms. Pre interstates, these motels were filled with travelers heading to and from the northeast corridor to Florida. With their cold hardy palms, neon paint jobs, and tropical inspired names such as Trade Winds, the parking lots of these humble roadside inns were packed with cars from as far away as Canada. Now they are owned by Asian Indians who have to deal with local riff raff. I've seen abandoned motels near Santee/Summerton with pindos as tall as palmettos. I'm not one who yearns for the good old days, but these whimsical pit stops still channel wonderful childhood memories. Sigh...
Hey, red! When I took pics of these dead/dying palms, I did go to one motel office, which had a sign directing me to a room with a window covered by closed blinds. I knocked on the door, but left after a couple minutes when no one responded - I started feeling very spooked. I just wanted to explain that, unlike Mumbai, palms here grow very slowly, and it would be very costly to replace such old specimens. So glad I had purell in my car!
