I had tons of cranberries left over from Christmas, so strung them in different lengths and hung them outside in the trees around our feeders. Not one has been touched, so apparently, my birds don't like cranberries. What kinds of birds eat them in your areas? They love the sunflower seeds in the feeders, but never touch the ones left on sunflowers either. Didn't like the raspberries I put out for them either. Maybe the birds are just spoiled? Finicky eaters? Never touch the suet feeder either.
My birds don't eat a balanced diet at all!
That is odd that so many things aren't being eaten but maybe there is a lot of natural food around. Do you have many trees around you?
We have quite a few trees, both evergreen and deciduous, but fortunately, the squirrels don't like my yard. And none of my neighbors actually put out bird food, so the birds are good scavengers, apparently. And we also have several dogs in the neighborhood, but rarely see any cats. However, they rarely eat the berries on my honeysuckles, so apparently like other things instead. They do LOVE the cherries on my trees, but won't touch the crabapples, lol!
I have that happen too. I put out things I have read that they are supposed to like but nobody eats it. Now I just accept that the birds in my yard don't like it. It seems to be a 'trial an error' to see what works for you & your area.
Ditto what Nanny said.
I have a high bush cranberry, and it's one of the last berries that get eaten. It usually last the whole winter. When Spring come the Robins and some migrating birds will eat them. Leave your Cranberries out till Spring, there might be takers then.
I see Bohemian Waxwings, Starlings and Robins eat the Crabapples in Spring .
I think they are just spoiled, lol! Sure wish something would eat those darn crabapples tho. They are a pain to clean up under the tree! I'll leave everything now til spring, since they're under 2 feet of snow now anyway. And I'll keep putting more stuff out for them of all kinds, just in case we get something new to fly in and try it. Course, probably means that I'll have all kinds of stuff to clean up and throw out or compost come spring, lol!
LOL, skellogg, we do love em, don't we?
It's just amazing how thrilled we get just seeing a new bird come to the feeders, lol! Ahhhh! The simple pleasures of life! (Or maybe in my case, it's just my simple mind, LOL!)
Tell me about it, ;) you can ask Pelletory and Nanny about my description of a Woodcock dance, I enjoyed a few years ago. I was beside myself. I'm pretty sure they remember that. I was just beginning to learn about the different birds, I was getting back then. Still do get excited when I get a new one.
