I spotted another Hawk in a backyard tree today and it was quite small compared to the other hawks (Red-shouldered, Red-tailed & Cooper's) that I've seen lately. It reminded me of the Cooper's Hawk but looked to be only @ 10" tall. It's the only picture I managed to get before it flew away and I'm wondering if anyone can tell from this image if it's a Sharp-shinned Hawk?
CLOSED: Sharp Shinned Hawk?
If the size is correct, then yes, Sharp-shinned. 'Fraid there's not enough visible in the pic to pick out any of the other differences between S-s and Cooper's - tail and feet are both hidden, and the bill end-on making bill size impossible to judge!
Resin
Thanks Resin, it was really small for a Hawk and when I first spotted it in the tree I thought it was some other bird because of the small size. Wish I could have gotten more photo's at different angles but it took off too quickly.
I'm going to just leave it labeled in my photo files as a Hawk!
Thanks again,
Lin
Good chance it may return if it gets hungry.
Burd: Yes, I'm going to be watching. We've had a lot of hawks around the past two years, I think it's easy pickings for them because of all the feeders in the yard that attract the small songbirds.
