Tulip bulbs storage question.

Miami, FL(Zone 10b)

Hello everyone. I was wondering if I can store my tulip bulbs alongside onion and potatoes?? We keep the onions and potatoes in the fridge to prolong it's usable time and I was wondering if I can keep my tulip bulbs in the same fridge for cold storage?? I know that fruits and bulbs are a no no together but not sure about onions even thought they are bulbs themselves and potatoes. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you;

It's not recommend that bulbs are stored with veggies or fruits since the gasses emitted them from affect the bulbs. I had a separate fridge for my bulb storage. Let's hear from the experts. Annette

If another fridge is needed I can always do that. However my impression was that onions were just like Alliums which are just ornamental onions and that potatoes were just like tuberous begonias or dahlias but then again I'm no expert in this matter and that's why I'm seeking assistance. I would want to be able to keep the bulbs here in my house instead of having to taking them to my aunt's house.

Why don't you plant them??

I don't plant them because I'm in the deep deep south. Even though I bought the Tulipa clusiana which are great for naturalizing in the south I still want to give them a slight winter rest. I wonder if the colder winter that we are getting here will be enough though. I bought these as test bulbs even though I bought enough to cover a large area. We'll see how it goes.

Roly0217, I also planted Tulip clusiana var Chrysantha, can't wait to see them bloom. In regards to your earlier question, it's ethylene gas from fruit that will cause the developing flower inside bulbs to rot. Did some looking online, can't find any info about storing your bulbs with onions and potatoes. Hopefully someone with more knowledge about bulbs will eventually answer your question. Were your bulbs bought pre chilled? One of the sites state they should be chilled for at least 6-8 weeks, and preferably 10 weeks before planting, would that be too late to get them planted for Spring blooming? It's hard living in the south, and loving Spring blooming bulbs :-)LOL. Also, check out eHOW, "Can You Store Onions and Potatoes Together". Hope this helps. I'm not sure which gas is emitted when these two are stored together. Annette

Annette I got that same variety of clusiana. The seller said that he plants his as late as March sometimes. Also according to what I've read the clusianas don't really need such an extended chill period so if I do store them now they'll be ready to plant by March.

That's good to know, I always spend the fall putting the bulbs in the ground thinking that if their not done by then, I won't have Spring blooms. Being further north, I guess I have to take into consideration that our ground does freeze, especially with this crazy weather we've been having this year, so fall planting makes sense for my zone 7b. I hope your Tulips do well. They should be a beautiful site in Miami.
