RED PLASTIC MULCH for tomatoes

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

I bought the RED PLASTUC MULCH for my tomatoes this year, but I don't know how to use it.
Has anybody try it yet?

"This bright red, embossed 1.0 mil. plastic mulch has been shown (in USDA tests) to increase production of first quality early tomatoes from 12 to 20%, relative to that of black mulch, in the cooler, Northern areas of the country. (SRM-Red mulch is not recommended for use in warmer, Southern areas, as no additional production increases has been shown in tests.) This dramatic increase has resulted from the film reflecting far-red light up into the plant. A color sensitive protein within the tomato plant that regulates plant growth and development is triggered during the reflecting period. "

How do I use it?
Do I cut pieces of plastic and lay it around the trunk of the tomato?
Or do I just roll the plastic in the ground and cut holes where I want to plant my tomato?
Shall I make little holes for the water to go trought the plastic?

Any help will be appreciate ... I just hope it is not an "unban legend"

Would this apply to us: "(SRM-Red mulch is not recommended for use in warmer, Southern areas, as no additional production increases has been shown in tests.)"

I've used the red mulch before (container only); planted my tomato, cut a slit in the mulch, put it around the plant and pinned it down. Nothing to compare it to, but didn't notice anything really great about growth, etc.

The red is gone after one season, by the way. At least that was my experience. I used it wrapped around verticle cages made of wire.

It doesn't sound like they're DISrecommending the red, just saying it won't make a difference one way or the other down here. And the original research was done by Clemson, which isn't all that much more north than Irving.

I'm wondering if we _would_ see a benefit with plants from further south than us. (I'm thinking tomatillos, specifically.)

I bought some as well. I know it is commonly used up north. I was thinking of putting half my plants on the red mulch and half on the usual black. Then we'll see.
