E. 'Suomi'

Brookfield, CT

This is a picture from a couple of years ago. I had to cut it back because it was outgrowing its sizeable container. It has taken its sweet time coming back. I hesitate to fertilize too much when plants are in a terrarium with no drainage. I would gladly swap offsets with anyone who would like to trade, but not until guaranteed warmer weather. BTW, The gesneriad Society convention is in Philadelphia this year, close enough for me to attend. Yay!

I love Suomi.

I love it too. It grows to the side of my violets. I have a pic. of that in the post I just made about my new shelf and table. It doesn't like direct bright light, at least for me. It loves to be beside the lights. Here is a picture of when it was smaller. Love that plant!

I took that picture in April of 2009. I'd say I had it for about 6 months before that. I still have it. Factoid: "Suomi" is Finnish for Finland. I learned that when we visited last summer. It is a beautiful country. Lovely people too.

That is interesting! Such a cold place for a heat lover to get its monicker. Do you know why it received that name? Lucky you for getting to visit that part of the world. What one place or thing would you tell a person to see or do while there?

Hi, I'm back after a spell of intense busy-ness. I wish I knew the story behind the naming of E. 'Suomi'. About visiting: if you are lucky enough to know a Finnish family, get yourself invited to their summer cottage by the lake. Finland has thousands of lakes and owning or renting one is common. You can enjoy the scenery and an authentic Finnish sauna. I also enjoyed a visit to a war museum that told the story of WW1 and WW2 from the Finnish point of view. Normally I would consider such a thing to be a big yawn, but it gave me insight into Finland's relationships with the Russians, Germans and the Swedes.

It is always enlightening to hear perspectives from people around the world. Lucky you for traveling.
