I had the roof blow off my saltbox bird house during the last storm. Bad part is that it blew into the street and the plow took it 1/2 way down the block! I found it when the snow melted and put it back together, then screwed it onto the house so that I wouldnt have to worry about it again. That was last weekend and look at this sparrow checking out the place this morning!

Finally got a resident that MAY move in to the new house!!
Looks like it might be a House Sparrow.
Yep, female House Sparrow. I suspect the box may be too small to interest most birds - not enough room in there to feed a growing family!

Hey Lion, I bought a hole restrictor so that house sparrows could not nest in my box. You might want to do that too.

They are available at TMB studios.

Cute house, by the way.

Great information, had no idea! My opening is 1.25" they say is good for nuthatch size. If I get it reduced down to 1and 1/8th inch hole thats good for chickadees and would prevent hosparrows from nesting there?
At the end of the day if one of my hosparrows ends up using the box god bless em, but if i can do something about trying to prevent it I will. as I got a lot of chickadees and nuthatches feeding daily.
yep, if you put a chickadee size on there, the sparrows can't use it. They will try.
HOWEVER, no matter what kind of bird nests in it, the little house wrens will be able to get in. I've had house wrens evict chickadees two years in a row. And no babies from either species!
