I would guess that the gravel is staying too wet in winter? A bit of bare soil around the base would let them dry with air. Sad to see a huge old Pachypodium fall over.

This is another pachypodium about 10 days ago... looked great!

but today here is a pachypodium same gardens (not same plant... but right nearby)... guess it got cold last week.

Hi Palmbob, On another board I mentioned that maybe it was that we had so much December rain-then followed by dry and cold just like that, might have done more damage because the C&S were filled with water. On the other hand those tropicalia we grow in California-like ferns and rainforest types,do better against frost kept heavily hydrated.
It might be rare for soucal to be so wet-than get a blast of clear and cold?
