Brachychiton discolor

This tree loses its leaves in summer and immediately comes into flower. Over several weeks the flowers drop and are replaced by new leaves.

Really!!! A couple of years ago, I was trying to get Margaret to share the PINK wealth all over!! Margaret, did you get any pure seeds from your so special cultivar?

PERTH, Australia

Thanks, palmbob. It is truly a spectacular tree. It starts flowering in October and even now, in May, there are a few flowers left. It loses its leaves in summer, a few weeks after the flowers form and is mostly leafless throughout the hottest part of summer (go figure).

Kell, I did try doing what you suggested but didn't have any success. My best bet would be to ask someone local who knows how to do it, to come over and help. Too late for this year.

Hey Margaret, I am back admiring your great photos!

Hi Kell. It had only a mediocre flowering for the 2019 season, but its near-neighbour, the Brachychiton acerifolius had it best show ever.

Any photos? I have got to say the Brachychitons are my favorite trees!

I took a few shots but they don't do the tree justice. I have them on my other computer. Brachychitons are my favourite trees, too, though I think the Poinciana would have to be number one. I have 12 Brachychiton rupestris I've grown from seed. Typical of the Brachychitons, they're taking their time in getting the signature bulbous trunk, but one is showing signs of developing a middle-age spread. The trunks are really green.

How old are your seedlings? You must have a lot of room. I grew a Brachychiton discolor from seed but it fell behind a shelf and when I realized it, it was dead.

I planted them into the ground in 2001. They're more than seedlings. I'll try to take some photos and post them. The tallest is about 20' high, but quite slender. I spoke to a man in Queensland who gathered seeds from the Broad-leaf Bottle Tree, Brachychiton australis, during a very narrow window of time. I was bemoaning the fact that my rupestris were tall and without the bottle shape. He explained that they tend to grow the bulbous trunk when they have periods of winter chill. That rarely happens where I live, but outback Queensland can have some extremely cold winter nights.
I could send you seeds from my discolor. Only thing is that I couldn't guarantee they would be pure because the acerifolius is so close to it.

You best invest in a few air conditioners! LOL You are so nice to offer me seeds. I just love your discolor!
