Advice for moving strawberries in the spring please!

Galesburg, MI(Zone 6a)

I have about 40-50 strawberry plants in a raised bed. They were planted in spring 2010 so they are fairly young but did very well throughout the year. My problem is that I want to use that bed for a different purpose and I don't have any other available garden space to transplant them. So I was thinking about some type of container that I can hang from the large expanses of privacy fence that surround my whole house. I had the idea to use a over the door shoe organizer and plant each one in a shoe space. But would that be enough root space? And would they still be OK overwinter? Any suggestions or other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

The shoe thingy may have enough room for roots, but if the roots freeze hard they may not survive. I have never had much luck with strawberries in containers-don't know why. They do well in cinder blocks-

I have tried strawberries in containers (hanging). They have far more rigorous watering needs in hanging containers and do not like to get too dry under those conditions. I would set them on the ground for over-wintering.

If you can water daily during the dry spells, the container idea would work OK. Don't know about the shoe holders though. Container plants nearly always require a lot more attention then those in the ground.

Hmm. The crazy watering needs was one of my concerns. I will definitely look into the cinder blocks Jo. I am a new gardener so I am not familiar with planting that way. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks so much JoParrott. I might give that a try. I think it would work great for the strawberries.
