Elizabeth
Very pretty Gordon!
How special to have Christmas blooms!
Karen
The blooms are gorgeous!. Merry Christmas everyone. I left my babies in the care of a neighbor while we took some time to spend Christmas with our two sons here in California. I hadn't been back home for Christmas for 5 years. It was about time.
They have rain! Something I haven't seen since mid September.
thans Karen.. yes and flowering this time of year is so helpful in getting through till spring..
a lovely trip Veronica...seems like most folks wouldn't like to see rain.. but it being that long makes it easer to bear... hope you get some back home or it wlll be a real danger..
thanks Elizabeth.. Merry Christmas.. and a big blooming year...
We had the 6th worst storm in history here yesterday and this morning.. record snow @ over 20 " drven by winds gusting to 59 MPH.. so there was lots of drifting... I guess it got from 3 ' to almost 5 ft up on the roof...
Your cool room is just board frame and foam insulation boards? How do the temps stand at night during winter months? What about light? Sorry I'm so nosy, I want to do something different than using my garage all winter. My greenhouse is plastic and I dismantle it in the winter.
Robyn.. well,, thanks for the interest.. the house is made of 2" builders foam.. like from Home Depot or Lowe's... it's 2' x 8 ' pannels that are attached to one another with a spray foam.. the walls sit on the outside of the floor system... 2 x 3 's that sit on the roof covered by the ply floor... no framing in the walls or ceiling.. aside from the ridge beam which is self supporting.. attached to planters on either end.. this holds the roof up.. and holds it down. ... along with the floor... filled with plants whch holds it down also.. it's not bolted or nailed down... but the crack between the floor and roof is foamed together.. to keep air out from below.... the door opening and the door is edged in metal .. just to attach the hinges and hardware to..
it's broken down in the spring and the foam is cut up and used in other projects.. planters and garden fixtures.. and a pond last year... the house is painted but if it was used as a year round building.. it's covered in a plastic stucco.. the foam and stucco is the covering for alot of building now... it's how they make nyc and vennice out in Vegas. and lots and lots of tuscony looking villas. through out the country. and sheithing for piles of brick buldings.. transformng them into new concrete structures... the detail the planter sits on in the first photo.. is all foam with the stucco covering.. as is most everything you see in this photo here.. built 15 years ago with last years foam bulding..
it keeps the temperature within 2 degrees of the settng.. day or night throughout the winter with a small electric heater set to a no freeze setting.. whch is about 45* F..
it has a light on a timmer.. till spring.. when I cut holes in the roof.. covered wth acrylic plastic.. whch kicks them into growing mode

Very clever, you virtually glued a house together and in the spring you cut holes in the roof like you would a cold frame. Wow, never would have thought that could be done. Recycling everything afterwords is brilliant. So you re make the house every year. Thank you for sharing, it has given me ideas for building something similar here outside and in my garage.
Well..t's sprng.. not real warm yet.. but it's time to cut the holes in the roof and walls.. to kick the simi dormant into gear for the '11 season... I wsh I could wake the dead
the house weathered wonderfully.. just like it went in the dream... I only went insde three times during the winter. I monitor the heat and humidity downstairs at the computer desk.. and I go up to water.. when the humidity gets below 60%
I cut an irregular hole.. to match my irregular plastic..
Gordon,
I'm glad you babies came through with flying colors.
Fantastic Gordon, glad to see life on the roof! Let the fun begin. Joelle
Gordon, every time it snowed there I wondered how the foam house was doing.
Looks like it was strong enough.
Good you survived winter well :) I love your view from the rooftop, too!
