Seed Sales - share your discoveries here

Dundee, IL

I always appreciate a good sale and like to share the news when I find one. No I am not affiliated with Johnny's in any way.

Johnny's had a pretty impressive collection of seed on clearance on their website (homepage, left side SALE in red letters). I called to get the scoop, it's all packaged for 2011 but either varieties they've decided not to carry anymore or stuff they just have wayyyyy too much of.

I ordered quite a bit at a buck a pack and even splurged on a few for 1.50. I figure for that price I can try a few new varieties and have enough seed for 4-5 years in most cases (lettuce and maters)

One thing to remember if you carry over from year to year, do not try that with pelleted or treated seed which only has a shelf life of one year. I did get two packs of pelleted for a buck each and figure if I only get one year's worth it's still a deal.

hostamama, I got in on that sale, too! I was impressed at the variety of items offered, and the prices were outstanding! I was really amazed what bargains they are doing.

I have no idea if it is still going on but it would be worth a look, folks.

As for the pelleted and/or treated seeds...

...it's been said that pelleted seed interferes with storage life and potential germination (even Johnny's states so) but I have pelleted basil from 1987 that is still viable. It is stored in airtight plastic jars so perhaps that may come into play, and I also store seeds in the freezer, when may also be a factor.

I've never heard that treated seeds would reduce the shelf life, thinking since the treatment is supposed to maintain seed viability in the ground why would it do the opposite in storage?

But again, great sale! Ya'll should check it out!

Trade Winds Fruit has some tomato, eggplant and pepper varieties for $.25 to $1.00.

Dlbailey,

Thank you so much for the heads up! I never knew of this place but they are in my seed favorites folder right now! I especially like that they have free shipping on every order over 7.50 - some places charge that much for shipping alone.

It was especially nice since they had a variety of eggplant (Listada de Gandia) for half the price of another site where I was going to have to pay 5.25 for shipping.

At the Tradewinds site I got three kinds of hot peppers, two types of eggplants, six types of tomatoes all for only 3 more dollars than I would've paid for one packet of eggplant at the other site.

I couldn't find a tradelist of yours but if there is some variety you're looking for please let me know and I'll send you some seed if I have them to say thanks for turning me on the Trade Winds!

Blue Ribbon Tomatoes always does a 20 varieties for $10. Sampleseeds.com has tons of tomatoes and many vegetables for $1-2 each. A few times a year Sustainable Seed Co. also has a big sale. I've ordered from all of these companies with few problems.

Trade Winds Fruit is also a very good seed company. Fast turn around on orders.

No, I don't have a trade's list, right now. Maybe after I go through all my seeds and start planning my next's years garden.

Ijust orderred some Asian vegetables and greens, if anyone wants to trade.

Or send postage via PayPal for small samples. If they're small enough, I could try sending in just an envelope with 44 cents postage, instead of a 42 cent bubble mailer plus $1.20 postage.
