I can't even remember the last time we had two years of snow over an inch or two in a row. We had 9" last year here in Lexington, and now they're saying this system that will be here for the weekend could have a "significant snowfall" amount. WLTX actually had one area (with the more aggressive model) showing over 14 inches. Holy snow!
I'm all for a white Christmas, but seriously, when's the last time we had two big snowfalls in a row? Much less in the same year?
Snow for Christmas?
Snow and temps around 30f is so much prettier and kinder than clear and frosty with temps in the teens, especially at Christmas. I remember the blizzard of '73, when this area received 2' of snow with white out conditions and 5' drifts. I'm humming to Annie Lennox's rendition of "Walking in a Winter Wonderland"! (But I won't believe it til I see it!)
Acccckkk, I remember that blizzard of '73 well. We had 16" in Summerville and I was 9 months pregnant. Thankfully my son was poky and held off until the roads were cleared which wasn't easy since the Lowcountry had NO plows. Homes were burning to the ground because the fire trucks could not get to them. It was a real eye opener and many lessons were learned from that storm.
I've heard my family talk about that storm, though that was before my time unfortunately. I do enjoy a good snow every now and then, but not when it means everything grinds to a halt. I remember one year (2001 I think?) it snowed a good deal in Columbia and then wouldn't melt... there was snow on the Carolina campus for what felt like weeks, ice on the stairs, it was a mess. But a quick heavy snow and then a melt I don't mind so much. My plants on the other hand - well not sure they like it so much. Looks like the snow greatly intensified north and west of the midlands. If that cold comes just a tad more to the east, we could see Snow early Christmas day.
My grandkids from FL will be in Columbia for Christmas, they would be so excited to see snow.
I was in high school at the time of the legendary blizzard, and I have many fond memories. Had I been pregnant (you poor thing!) and aware that there were homes burning to the ground in some parts of the state, my elation would have been tempered - slightly. I'm one of those native S Carolinians who loves snow! I experienced bigger snowstorms during the 30 years I lived in the Phila region, but that "once in a 100 year snow" in Sumter is still the storm that evokes the happiest memories. (Ironically, I had taken many pics of the transformed snowscape, but they were destroyed by water during that other meteorological legend, hurricane Hugo. Shouldn't have left them down here all those years.) Accuweather isn't predicting snow for us, but we'll soon find out just how accurate they are.
They keep flip flopping on the snow/rain thing every couple of hours .. guess we won't know til it gets here.
Looks like we're definitely set for snow now... they changed it overnight. They had pretty much said it would be a rain event, but now they're saying 1-4 inches in Lexington. Total flip flop.
Merry Christmas everyone.
Well they are saying here we'll start out as rain then mixed with snow mid morning and by noon all snow til 5pm.
I'll check back in an hour .. they'll probably change it again.
We are right on the line, with the forecast for 2-3 inches east of us, and up to 8 inches west of us. Looks like a white Christmas. Best wishes to you all.

It was 41 here and we had about 30 minutes of tiny, tiny flakes. Very strange weather.
Edited to add it is coming down hard now. The dog is loving it!

Its Sunday night and still snowing out side. I have a head cold and the funk. Looks lovely but I am ready for it to stop. Son has 11 inches at his house in Youngsville and youngest has 9 at his house in Apex. The grandkids are having a ball.
Entlie hope all is well there
and hope everyone is warm and safe.
No cars have pasted our place all day

Thanks for the good wishes, Lavina. Hope you are feeling better. Our snow started Christmas night and continued through the day yesterday, ending in the evening. We probably got 3 inches all told, but it was very wet and melted off the drives and walks. Today the snow is still on the ground and the streets are a sheet of ice with temps in the 20's. Glad I don't have to go anywhere today.

I,m at work, only went thru 1 bad spot but boy is it cold outside. Going to Ral. in the AM tomorrow as they are operating on son again.
Stay warm everyone.

Drove to Greenville today, some icy slush on the road going up, but returning it has melted off and dried before freezing again. Don't they clear that highway?
Lavina, prayers for your son, and thinking of your family.

I couldn't believe it was snowing in Summerville. We were down with Tori's family and that was pretty cool.
We didn't get much snow in Lexington, at least not compared to Irmo just over the dam. They got about 4" at my parents house, but we barely got a dusting. Weird microclimates. Last February it was us who got like 9" and they only got a few inches. Weird.
