Good news for citrus growers in Austin/San Marcos area

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

All of the selections that we had available to us were on Sour Orange rootstock until now. I have noticed that local nurseries are carrying citrus from Creekside in Hempsted. These are grafted on Trifoliate rootstock and will do excellent on the soil here. It will also add cold hardiness to the citrus. If you already have citrus and it is on Sour Orange, you have probably noticed that is has not grown or only a little bit in a few years. You probably bought it from Lowes or Home Depot. This slow growth will be even more apparent if you have clay. With good fertilization, you should expect faster growth and better cold tolerance on the Creekside citrus. You will often notice that the base of the tree on Trifoliate with be really large compared to the upper half.

If you are planning on keeping your citrus in a pot or ammending a large 4x4x4, either rootstock will be fine.

I hope this helps with people that gave up trying to grow it due to poor or lack-luster experiences.

Here are some of the nurseries I found that are carrying it.
