I recently got a beautiful card from a DG'er and it brought back so many wonderful memories that I cried. The card was an internet one and it was playing "White Christmas" a song my Dad used to sing to me every year at my urging. :) He had a lovely voice and did his best Bing Cosby impression of it. The card also showed a horse and buggy traveling thru the snow, something he and my Mother did many times as kids. You see, they met when they were 14, in 1933, married in 1942 and were inseperable until he died in 1985. This card hit home and gave me a well needed release of emotions that I didn't know i had welled up inside. So thank you Dear friend, you know who you are :)
Here's a copy of the card, i'd like to share it with all of you ...I added my own message.

Got a favorite Christmas Song?
My second favorite song would be from The Sound of Music,
"My Favorite Things"
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things
Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Door bells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things
Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into Springs
These are a few of my favorite things
When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad.
SO, thats their version anyways.....
I thought a different version was in order for me and my DG friends too, so this is mine........
Buds on my JM and worms in my compost
Seedlings emerging and weeds turning to toast
Sturdy green stakes and a big ball of string
These are a few of my favorite things!
Bee’s buzzing wildly from flower to tree
Aches in my back, hand and my knee
Daffodil’s nodding their head in the spring
These are a few of my favorite things.
Seeds in the mail and a shiny new hoe
Afternoon showers with a lovely rainbow
The birds and the flowers, all of nature sings
These are a few of my favorite things.
When the bug bites
When the sun stings
When I’m itching bad
I simply remember my favorite things then I don’t feel so sad.
Roses on the trellis and perfume in the air
Veggies in the garden with plenty to share
A labor of love we do every spring
These are a few of my favorite things.
Lilies and echies that dance in the breeze
Fields of golden rod to make you sneeze
Bountiful harvest that’s fit for a King
These are a few of my favorite things!
Sunsets and sunrises and dew on my flowers
Digging and buying and planning for hours
Wading through magazines waiting for spring
These are a few of my favorite things.
When the bug bites
When the sun stings
When I’m itching bad
I simply remember my favorite things then I don’t feel so sad.
So no one has a favorite?? Thats OK...I have several!!

Celeste love your garden rendition of "My favorite Things"
anything from Nat King Cole
Thanks Pixie, for sharing your memories & poem with us....your Dad died too young, but you have wonderful memories of him! I like the old Christmas carols, The Holly & the Ivy, Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, I saw Three Ships, Still, Still, Still. When I was in the church choir, I loved Advent, so I could sing these songs.
Prokofiev's Peter & the Wolf, with either Sir Peter Ustinov or Sir John Gielgud narrating is always on my playlist for Christmas, I like the instrumental version without the narration preformed by the famous symphony orchestras also. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Little Drummer Boy, I'll Be Home For Christmas (If Only In My Dreams), are favorites also.
(I grew fond of that last one when I actually was away for X-mas on many an occasion.) - When you're actually separated from what is familiar to you for Christmas, (including loved ones & all the usual trappings, etc.), you learn to dig into your heart to find it.☺
- But there's no, one, specific, 'favorite song'.
We have a dvd recording of the 'Yule Log' WPIX put up on Christmas, DW plays it on Xmas morning. I usually play Bing Crosby, the Andrews Sisters, Dinah Shore CDs. Anything soft & soothing sung by the stars of the 1940's- 1950's. DW and I even look for radio stations on Christmas day which play the oldies, as well as instrumentals & choral music. ( I stay away from the modern stuff, for my taste I find it's not as soothing or imaginative as the old stuff.)
Just saw this. Nice thread.
Tough for me too. I like so many. And I, too, love Nat. I love White Christmas, The Christmas Song, O Holy Night, Johnny Mathis version of Sleigh Bells, Mary Did You Know? (incredibly beautiful), We Wish You the Merriest by Frank & Bing, The Christmas Waltz by Frank.
Old ones that I am liking more and more are Ella's Santa Claus Got Stuck in MY Chimney and Jimmie Dean's My Christmas Room.
I like Dominic! And the barking dogs. And Grandma. ^_^
O Come All Ye Faithful.
Just sat in the car listening to Trans Siberian doing it, part of a medley I think.
And lots of others, the next one might be the grinch.
Nice version of Favorite Things, Celeste! Very cute.
Love the TSO too!
"...when the bee stings, when my tongue swells, when I go in shock..."
I was disappointed TSO wasn't doing a show here this year, it was awesome when we did see it.
yes very cute favorite things Celeste and Victor
I'd love to see them. Our church's musical director saw them last year and loved them.

♫ Sleigh bells ring, are you listening,
In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight,
We're happy tonight.
Walking in a winter wonderland.
Gone away is the bluebird,
Here to stay is a new bird
He sings a love song,
As we go along,
Walking in a winter wonderland.
In the meadow we can build a snowman,
Then pretend that he is Parson Brown
He'll say: Are you married?
We'll say: No man,
But you can do the job
When you're in town.
Later on, we'll conspire,
As we dream by the fire
To face unafraid,
The plans that we've made,
Walking in a winter wonderland.
In the meadow we can build a snowman,
And pretend that he's a circus clown
We'll have lots of fun with mister snowman,
Until the other kids knock him down.
When it snows, ain't it thrilling,
Though your nose gets a chilling
We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo way,
(big finish)
Waaaaalking in a wiiiiiinter wonderlaaaaand ♫
Love all the songs mentioned so far!
Victor, if i got the reaction you get from bee's i'd of thought of that verse first! LOL
Oh thank you D-Nut!!! Love that song, sang to my true-luv on the way into town to get our tree today. It's SO nice to have that smell in the house again!!!!
Another song I like alot and very seldom here is "What Child is This?"
Yes - love that smell. Was going to finish decorating today but had to pick up the little guy from school - not feeling well. Hopefully not the strep we had.
Lovely thread, Celeste! The mention of all of those lovely songs brings to mind some very warm and happy thoughts of Christmas's past. Your rendition of Fav Things was very clever and fun!
Dahlia Dear......that song is one of my very very Favs! I could just hear you singing it!
WC - we do the very same thing here with the oldies from the 40s and 50s...love them all. We watched Bing and Danny in White Christmas last night....so corny and fun!
Victor - sure hope your little guy turns the corner very soon...with NO strep!
Another favorite is Stevie Wonder's Someday at Christmas.
In case someone is not familiar with it:

Thanks WC, thats cheap too!!!
Dnut, the song that you like was written by Leroy Anderson, who lived just a few towns away from me. He had a mentally handicapped son, Eric, who passed away a few years ago.....Eric was the janitor at my sister's school....he had a huge record collection, & could sing many songs.....the whole family was much loved.......
That's nice, Robin!
Every summer, Anderson's town of Woodbury has a Picnic in the Park with the Waterbury symphony....always play some of his songs....folks bring & ring sleigh bells in the middle of summer!
Sounds cool! Really love Winter Wonderland! Was it the Andrews sisters that always sang it? Maybe it was the pretty girls on the Lawrence Welk show. When I was a youngun, our elderly neighbors always watched Lawrence Welk faithfully. I often went over to see them and show them anything new (toys etc.) and then when I was home from college I'd go over and see them and if it was on Sat. night, I'd have to watch LW with them. "a one and a two....take it away, Myron...." Funny how some memories stay with you forever!
I think it was the Andrews sisters.....my Dad always watched Lawrence Welk! He loved opera best however, & had a large collection of records.....he used to whistle the operatic songs...you don't hear folks whistle tunes anymore!
That's true. Sometimes I hear workers whistling while they work. I like it.
silent night always reminds me of being a kid and watching the lights twinkle on the tree... I like Stevie Nicks version

Hard to believe, but I heard an old song today, for the very first time. It's called The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot. Incredibly sad, I came very close to crying. Anyone familiar with it?
Here are the lyrics. Some of the comments are very interesting.

No, but thanks for the warning. The last thing I need to hear is sad, depressing songs at Christmas time.
Thats sad...and a lie! Santa would never forget any child!! :)
You know the song "All I want for Christmas is my 2 front teeth" well Grandaughter Hayden has been singing it for weeks!!! Then she looks at her sisters beautiful teeth and sings her own second verse "strong and white are a must and I will need a new tooth brush!" LOL
they are too cute
Nice smiles.
Cute!
Yes, I hate sad Christmas songs. Another is the one about the shoes for the dying mom. What are people thinking?!!
