Winter Growing Season Adventures

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I really prefer it to summer and I have learned to eat all kinds of things that I never would before. We are expecting our second hard freeze and so far my raised beds and home-made EBs are really doing well. Here is a shot of my extra large bed with collards, cabbages and oriental greens.

Here is a shot of my little raised beds (3' x 3') all full of shallots, kale, oriental greens and turnips.

Here are my latest experiment, baby bok choi in one and a mix of turnips and carrots in another home made EB. My 84 year old step-father made these for me last month. I am so proud of them.

And finally, the prettiest of all and my newest crop - ruffled blue kale. I will use it in the flower beds next year.

Beautiful! Those should all take your recent cold too.

Aquannie,
Your garden patch is gorgeous! Now, tell me what your planting medium is? MG potting mix? Some other mix? compost? fertilizer?

P.S. Clever use of the wires to keep the HEBs from bowing out on the sides!

Thanks for the kind words. I use the vegetable planting mixture from Lowes made by Jungle Growth. Just that and nothing else. I do have drip irrigation in each box to keep them moist and just fertilize whenever I can with a liquid. I have such great production.

I'll tell my step-dad how clever you think he is with the anti-spread wire. He'll get a kick out of it. He is 84 and loves making them.

Ahh Yes! My old standby -- Jungle Growth. That container mix is great. I will soon be mixing it in with my coco coir. Aquannie the crops you planted love cold weather and the cold will much improve the taste. Brussel Sprouts are magnificent after a frost. I don't care for store bought but I love my own but I did not plant any this season much to my regret.

I love your ruffled blue kale. I'm always fantasizing that I will grow only (or at least mostly!) edible things in my landscapes and that is pretty enough for the front yard. Thanks for the idea.

We've now had a number of hard freezes and my gardens actually look better than ever. I am so glad I planted smart for a change. No more tryng to cover and save plants that ought to be dead, at least until I do it again this spring. I always think I have to pick the first north Florida tomato or I have failed. :-)

Those veggies look yummy, and very productive. Which Jungle Grow do you use?

Joy, I don't really have any idea. I think the bag has a big green label stripe and veggies are mentioned as uses? Sorry. We will be having fresh greens for luck tomorrow.

Alrighty! Fresh veggies from the garden always taste better than grocery ones for sure.
