Hi
I am looking to find someone or ones that live in the Mission, Donna area in the valley.
I am traveling down there with my mother the week after Christmas and she thinks we are going to go and get vanilla and a few other things during the daytime.
I know she is expecting a call from some friends down there from Arkansas after some meeting as to what can or can't be done but I want to know first hand from someone down there how it is around progresso.
Please give me a holler

I live in Harlingen and it takes me about 30 mins to Nuevo Progresso. Mission is on the west side of McAllen and is quite a ways from NP. Donna would be closer but I'd advise not to go there after dark. Weslaco is closer and probably safer if you don't want to stay in Harlingen. Weslaco also has a large outlet mall.
Progresso is the town you want to visit in the daytime. The Local authorities are advising staying out of Reynosa and Matamoros. I plan on going there soon and can give you an update. Last time I was there, a couple months ago, everything was ok and had no problems.
They have the National Guard just the other side of the bridge with a military armored car with a mini-gun, one guard behind sand bags and two standing around, armed. That is the only place I see them and have heard of no incendences happening. They seem to be there for our safety. It was scary at first but they have been there for a couple years.
The Policia there are very friendly. It's a small town and 2 or 3 blocks on the main drag is all you need to go to find what you need including a nice lunch. You just need to be aware of what is going on around you.
I'm not trying to scare you but letting you know what to expect. I am a man and speak very little Spanish and felt very comfortable last time I went by myself.

I appreciate the help. Who better would know then someone that lives in the area.
My folks usually come down and go to the area for the month of January but my dads health is limiting him so I am driving my mom down the week after Christmas for a few days so we can do her shopping while my DH gets to stay home and be with my dad.
Every town you mention I know they go to for different things and we were there 2 yrs ago for a few days with them and hit them all.
The only place they go over is Progresso and when we were there they had the guards there then too.
I know my oldest nieces fiance said when he was there last month on a job they told them not to go out at night which of course makes sense and we aren't going at night.
I'm not sure where we are staying but I do know the couple from Arkansas that is there now is suppose to be calling my mom after Thursday to tell her about the meeting they went to about going into Mexico.
Any updates you can give me would be great between now and the 27th when we head down.
