I'm doin' it!!!

Don't get too excited...
Six weeks ago I dug up a few amaryllis bulbs from my gardens and put them in the fridge. I just took them out and potted them up. I figure I'll have blooms in late January. Not too bad, I figure I'll be dying for some blooms by then!

Will do! Right now, there isn't any growth.

I've never had much luck with amaryllis indoors.

Me, either - mine are all grown in the ground and come back each year.

Glad I'm not the only one. Lol .. thought I was special .. guess not! ;-)

I guess I have to be bold and ask Barbie - 'why aren't you planting in the ground'?

I do them both ways, I buy the bulbs, enjoy them in the house that first winter then plant outside and enjoy them out there forever. Sometimes I dig a bulb up in late summer, let it dry out and then pot it up for Christmas bloom. The best of both worlds.

This is La Paz this week.

This one never photographs well and looks pale in pictures. It is Benfica and the color is a very deep, rich red. My timing was off, this one was supposed to bloom for Christmas.

X, what kind of trouble are you having with them indoors? I find them to be the carefree, indoors or in the ground and that is why I keep buying more and more each year.

I do grow them in the ground. I just wanted some indoors, so dug up two of the 6 or 7 that I have to see if it would work.
I work at Home Depot garden center, so am looking at amaryllis bulbs for sale all day at work. To keep some level of self-control (and not buy ALL of them) , I decided to force some I already own.

Dang, now I need La Paz and Benfica!
Sigh.....

Yeah, and bulb co ops are dangerous, there are just so many pretty ones out there.

I also put mine outside after they bloom indoors the 1st winter. I didn't realize they could be brought back inside again for winter bloom. I figured once they got on the summer blooming schedule, that was probably it for indoor winter blooms. Interesting. I may try that sometime.

ardesia, I think you your photo of Benifica is gorgeous. I realize the actual bloom may well be even darker, but the one in your photo looks rich and velvety even from the thumbnail, very, very nice.

Dream,
When I read up on doing this, it did say that it would, over tijme, weaken the bulb, so I'm just going to try it this once.
BTW - no growth yet.... ;( Perhaps I should move it to the garden window in the kitchen. it would get several hours of direct sun there.

Our Lowes has them blooming on the dark shelf today - no light, no water - BLOOMING!

I feed the bulbs heavily in spring and early summer then in late summer I dig a couple. I did it too late this year because the summer was so darn hot. They are still not completely dry.

Kay, we had some returned where I work because they had already bloomed and faded in the boxes!
