So tell me what you think??
I hate my LG bators
I think you got a good deal, but only 16 eggs? You'd need 2 1/2 to match a LG bator..
I've given up on bators since I had a broody. :) My dependable broody is on the nest again.. and I can't give her but a wooden egg for now. :( I'm sold on letting them do the work, and raise the babiez... so much cheaper and better hatches, better chicks.. but that's just me. :)
oh they are best. I used my broodys all summer and now 2. just used 3 and have another one gone broody. The one hen keeps going back in the nest box everytime I put it back on the ground. Guess I should have let her keep the chicks for a day
I have a bantam hen that has been the ultimate broody.. She has raised several clutches of chicks.. only one being her own.. She just decided to go broody for winter and it's all I can do not to load her up with Serama eggs! If I had the place for her.. I would do it in a heartbeat.. but I'm having to move and the future of my chickens is shaky at best.
Meet Biffy.. and yes, she is as fierce as she looks... Pound for pound she is the most valuable chicken I've ever had.. with a personality of royalty. :)
What a wonderful face! I do hope you don't lose your ability to keep chickens; all of us would suffer. We count on your extensive chicken knowledge and experience.
I agree with Porkpal!
oh how awful ZZ. Sure hope you find a place where you can keep your babies
Oh you can make another shelf and have 2 sets of 16 eggs incubating. I am just so over the temp fluxuations in the LGs. I do get good hatches but have to constantly monitor the temps
I hear ya Donna! I wasted a lot of $ on Styrofoam bators, thermometers, etc. I totally agree with you, there is a point where they are just not worth the expense and stress.. Not to mention the roo to pullet ratio that is incredibly high with the temp fluctuations... I hope you get something set up.. That is a neat lil item!
Thank you all for the kind words. :)
Good Lord ZZs did you just run that bird through the dish washer and skip the rinse cycle...ROTFLMBO
What kinda chicken is that?
Hope you get settled in a wonderful place soon and have everything just like you want it.
Thank you Cajun.. please excuse my rudeness! I was giggling about Haystack.. and forgot to thank you for your kind words.
I love making you giggle ZZs. That pic with the babies is really cute and she is very pretty when you see all of her. I think the Nankin breed is really interesting, I never see or hear much about them. I know they are a very old breed, and they are aparently great sitters so I wonder why we don't hear more about them. I have heard they are as good if not even better brooder's than the silkies...So whats up with these birds???
I love her color. I will have to google nankin.
Yes, Catsy is the Nankin Queen. They are excellent mothers and great lil birds. So yeah, poor Biffy was destined to be a fierce mother and she does it well. She is only a bantam, and the only hen I've ever been scared of. She will defend her nest, even if it means getting off and kicking the crap out of you... LOL
LOL!!!!
ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guess she gives a pretty good mean eye too
How is Catsy doing???
She is fine thank you.
Be sure you don't cross that hen with a game roo. LOL
Brrrrrrrrrr it's cold outside
Santa came yesterday with my new bator. I got it set up but only have a (new)bad thermometer. Going to take out the one from my incubating eggs to see what it reads. It is holding steady temps and humidity according the the thermometer I have in there. Pics later
Did I say it is cold outside. My ducks and geese hit the pond this morning and all went sliding ROFL!!!!!!! You should see the looks I got. The geese finally broke through in the shallow areas and all of them got out and came up to the house. Wish I had my camcorder
Makes me remember. When we lived at the other place we had a bigger creek that ran through our back yard. There were wild ducks all over it. We used to feed them corn. When the creek would freeze over DH would throw corn out to them. Some would land on the ice and there would be a mad scramble to get it. They would slide right past it. It was so funny to watch.
That's a crack up! I'd love to see ice skating ducks! LOL
Congrats on the new bator Donna I hope it works out better for you.
OH Donna your so spoiled: You've got the Coolest ducks, a new bator, your own skating rink. I guess the question really is!!! What don't you have???...LOL...Hay
Donna two nights ago I was watching Nat Geo and they were showing a place where it was all frozen over and the wild ducks were comming in on their journey south and they were landing on solid ice that looked like huge ponds. I was laughing myself sick with their landings and they could not stop...it was hystericall...Hay
it is truly funny to watch
Hay the only thing I don't have is the physical ability to do much of what I need to do or want to do anymore. My birds keep me up and moving for now. Pretty sad my 70 yr old mother has to come do the heavy house cleaning for me twice a month.
We had always planned at this stage of ours lives is to buy a bike(like yours) and do some traveling around the U.S.
Donna why do they call it our golden years ?theres nothing golden about it! unless your rich you have to watch what you spend and stay on a budget after you retire or stop working, you hurt all over some days, your body is stiff when you get up and even more stiff when you go to bed,if you stay on the computer to long either your back or neck stiffens up(LOL)If you want to start walking for some excersise either you knees or hips won`t let you go very far,oh well you get the picture, not that I`m complaining it could be a whole lot worse! just wondering why its called the golden years?
Oh Donna, I don't want to pry but I did not know you were having physical difficulty...I seriously will keep you in my prayers as I do LFJ, Cajun, and some others who are going thru difficulty...I do pray that the Lord will strengthen you in the might of His Spirit...I'm meeting this saturday with a Bible College Friend who has cancer and is not thought to live maybe til the first of the year. There are no words for the difficulty some are experiencing, just hugg them and be with them in their last days and let them know they are loved and will be joined soon... I often feel torn to be here with those I love and to leave and join those who I love that have gone before me...
I messed up Hay with multiple ailments. I fell and hurt my neck/ lowerback in Jan or Feb 1990. They kept telling me nothing was wrong because nothing would show up on any of the test and that's how Workers Comp does people. My neck show herniated disk but not bad enough for surgery but then my compliants of shoulder pain were said to come from my neck and the migranes well they just didn't care. I did less and less and it decreased the frequency of the migranes. I have none now because i don't do anything that takes any effort to do. My whole body hurt and I kept working as a Structual Welder until I just couldn't. I went back to school and got my degree in Medical Laboratory Technology not thinking I was going to have to bend 50 times a day to draw blood besides running all the labs. Did that for 4 yrs then worked here and there for less and less money trying to keep working. I got a diagnosis of Fibro and was told it was all in my head. In 1994 my leg started hurting very bad but was numb feeling at the same time if that makes sense. I went to a Neurologist on my own and told him everything I had been through with the comp Drs. He started at the beginning and of course a CT, MRI and Myleogram showed nothing. He then ordered a Disk-O-Gram. and how nothing could not show up on any of the other test is beyond me. 1 disk was no longer there and the one above and below it were damaged. He repair the damaged ones and built a cage with rods and screws and bone grafts for support to the damaged one. My bill was 100,00+ but I only had to pay 10% thankfully. The Titanium Rods alone were 44,000!!!!!
Still have pain so did a RA test. Barely positive and sent my records to RA Dr saying he probably wouldn't want to see me. RA Dr wanted to see me immediately. RA meds still hasn't helped and have tried several. Allergic reaction to Lyrica, the other one didn't help either and made me so hot I couldn't get out from under the a/c vent or i would fall out. Cortizone is the only thing that helps but not something you can take everyday. I am on Methatrexate for what good it is doing me. Ra affect your joints, muscles, internal organs, and skin. My poor hands and feet hurt from the spliting and cracking. I am on my 3rd different prescription hand cream now. It to is not helping
My hand go numb and tingly and hurt. Have had 7 Carpel Tunnel test with negative results. Nero D wants to operate on both hands. I said no I will no pay for it. Only if Comp does and they won't with a neg dx.
In 93 I lost use of my right arm from shoulder. Comp Dr said it was from my neck but he would do another test just in case. Injected dye into chest muscle and did a MRI well i don't remember what it was but they did surgery and took 1 yr to get 70% use of my arm back. I went through that with no pain meds!!!! Dr gave hubbie wrong script and I called for different one and nusre told me there was nothing lighter than that. I could take Tawlin which only made me a little sick and not at all if I went to sleep. Pain meds make me terribly sick. can only take Mepragan I found out after back surgery which they now no longer make(of course)
My BP goes bezerk once a yr. the worst was 210 over 120 and made both eyes hemmorage. ER sent me home with eye drops lol. they keep changing them or increasing the strength. they did kidney test thing it was from that but test were neg but doesn't mean anything to me as I have found I show neg when I do have a problem
2005 I lost everything I owned in Katrina and was barely walking 3 month after back surgery and still in hard brace
August 2006 threw blood clot to intestines and was told I was lucky to be alive that it could have ruptured my intestines. I thought I was sick and never looked at what was coming out of me for 6 hrs. Called DH home to take me to hospital praying I wouldn't have a accident before we got there. No reason could be found so was sent to Blood Specialist. I have a Heriditary Blood Clotting disease something to do with a Prothrombin factor
Would explain why my father stroked at 33 and left like a retarded child died at 56 and my Moms sister at 38. She was very fat and they looked for no other reason for her blood clot.
I just look forward to the day I get to go home to our Dear Lord but in the mean time I have made my own little bit of Heaven here on earth and am content ;-)
Oh my goodness Donna you poor thing and I was complaining about a stiff neck.I`ll be putting you on my prayer list.
Donna, I am very impressed at all that you do given your difficulties!
I am so sorry to know you have all these problems. Life can be so hard. I am much like you in my thinking. I try to keep going as much as possible. To give in is to be defeated. I will never do that. You sound like a fighter yourself. :) When my muscles spasm and the pain is so bad I can hadly take a breath I keep reminding myself that I am only a stranger passing through this life. I am on my way to Heaven where there is no sickness or pain, no sorrow or heartache. The only things I can take with me are souls and I have to do my best to spread the good news of God while I am here, to make my life an example of His love and forgiveness. If I do that, my life will have been a success though I die a crippled pauper. You will be in my prayers.
Donna you have my prayers and Hugs! God Bless you , Cajun and all of you with such terrible trials. I do feel blessed to have you all as friends, I wish I could do more for you!
I don't like to complain. It puts a damper on the good times for everyone. And like the song says "I'm doin' pretty good for the shape I'm in." LOL
But it's nice to know that when I am having a hard time I can come here and mention it and I know friends will be praying for me. That means a whole lot.
you are right Cajun I try to just ignore it all and get through the day. don't want to bring anyone down to my level of life.
The thing that bothers me even more than pain is the lack of sleep. I rarely sleep more than 2 hrs at a time, 4 if i am very lucky, then it is toss and turn sleeping only 10 or 20 minutes at a time but have learned I have to stay down for 6 to 8 hours to let the muscles relax as much as they can or the pain is just to bad to function. muscle relaxers only put me to sleep for a couple of hours and nothing for the pain. I only take a pain pill when I absolutely can't function. When I go to long with to little sleep I take a xanax then it's lights out for 10 to 12 hours and what a wonderful feeling it is to wake up and not hurt until I get to moving around. To afraid to take on a regular basis because I don't want to get addicted
Thank you all for the prayers
It is these type of things, that really bring me to my knees. These are the issues that make me know how really helpless we are...I will continue to pray for all of you knowing that only God is in control. I believe the greatest thing we all have to offer is to remind these who suffer so greatly is that they are loved, and that in our spirits we also cry for them...having you tell us what is on your plate has it's own intrinsic value. If I can't change things for you please know your are valued, loved, respected and always held up before God's throne of Grace...Haystack
here it is. I transferred my eggs out of the LG. Have temp set at 104 to get 101.6 at egg level. I have 20 bantam eggs on the shelf set in the middle and could probably put 4 more. They are due to hatch Dec 28th
The only thing I worry about is any goo dripping into the fan motor in the back. I may move those couple of eggs forward to be safe

Can I say WOW!!! That is a high tech bator. I have two LGs. I use one for incubating and one for hatching. The temps flucuate but I've done pretty good with them. Those blue and green eggs are bantams?
I have trouble sleeping too but more of a problem is trying to rest. My mind never shuts down. I dream ALL night long and wake up as tired as when I went to bed. And I am talking CRAZY dreams. I take zanaflex when I absolutely have to but it is a last resort because the dreams are even crazier with the meds. I do sleep more than you though. I wake up many times a night but I do go back to sleep.
Hay, thank you so much for your encouragement. You are always so kind and thoughtful. I always feel better after "talking" with you. And you are right. It does help to talk about it sometimes. And knowing that we can come here, to our friends, and not have to feel like we are considered whiners, is a real comfort. Thank you all for that liberty.
On a happier note, Miracle laid an egg for me today. I have not gotten one from her in quite some time. I thought she was finished until Spring. I guess the sunshine changed her mind. She is the pullet that was attacked by the stray dog and had all the skin ripped off one side of her breast.
Cajun that's what I was doing with my LG's. One incubating and one for hatching. It is actually a mini fridge/warmer and not a incubator at all. They are selling them as reptile incubators and people started using them for chickens eggs too. I got mine on sale for 89 at ThinkGeek.com
Rofl!!! I take 2 zanaflex every night when I am ready to try and sleep or I never would. Doesn't give me bad dream but Elavil did. I took them one time only and never again. Talk about horrid nightmare. I woke up screaming and scared poor DH half to death. if your mind isn't shutting down you need a anti-depressant. believe me I know. I took them for years on and off for a yr at a time until finally I didn't need them anymore. If you haven't tried them please do. I really liked the Zoloft and even lost some weight while on them.
Thank you all for your kind words and prayers. I am thankful I am still able to walk and do a few things like take care of my animals. DH does anything heavy or hard for me if needed but for the most part it is all pretty easy. The only hard thing for me is carrying their waterers in and out of the cage for cleaning
Cajun! Donna! Does not the Scripture tell us to bear one anothers burdens? Does it not also tell us "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, their is Liberty. Don't thank me, it's once again proof of the love of the people here and the Spirit of the Lord, that gives us all the liberty to speak, share and bear oneanother up...I just enjoy it and love all this great family...Hay
I have 1 hen and 1 pullet in my living room. I booted the roo out. Now he keeps lurking around the door trying to get back in. LOL He followed DH into the wash rrom and I had to put him out. (the roo, not DH LOL ) The hen was the only one in the uphill coop still laying. She is the one that pulls at my pants leg to be fed. I picked her up and she is skinny so i brought her to the house to fatten her up a bit. The pullet is much smaller than the others. I noticed her shivering so i picked her up and realized she was skinny. I also noticed the bottom of her beak does not match up with the top. She eats well but slowly so I don't think she has been able to compete with the others. I have her inside fattening her up too.
Miracle has layed for me the last 3 days in a row.
