Blue/Splash/Black silkie genetics
Beautiful, very beautiful.
Fantabulous, Beautiful and colorful. My eyes love color, it makes my eyes dance...Hay
Wow! Love that splash!!!
Oh nO OH No!!!! You went and done it!!!! ooooooh Blue Silkies on my mind!!!!!! LOL!!
they are just BEE-u-tiful , Light_for_Jesus!
They arrived in the mail this morning. They look better than the pictures. IMHO I'm kind of excited about them now.
I was originally asking about the genetics on the splash/blue/black then nobody answered me, so I was trying to delete the post. Didn't know how to delete the pictures.
Thanks for the comments. I have that splash rooster that is supposed to be from George's line that I was thinking of breeding with them. He's nice, but not a very big crest.
I think I asked this before, but one had laid an egg in the box. I'm thinking about putting it and maybe others laid by them under the other broody silkies, in case they are fertile. Wonder how long the eggs they lay will be fertile from the previous roosters. Seems I knew before, but forgot.
The egg has been in the car today, will it still hatch you think? It's cool but not cold here.
I don't know why I asked that about the egg. I've had eggs shipped, so I know the answer. Sorry, guess I'm too tired. Been with my grandson 4 days and he goes FULL SPEED AHEAD all waking hours. He's a doll, but man, he's hard to keep up with for me.
Found this concerning how long the eggs are fertile after being with a rooster.
After the rooster has mated with a hen the sperm packet is good for about 10 days. Unlike most creatures the birds do not need fertilizing each time, for each egg. The sperm is stored in the cloaca of the hen for up to 10 days and then needs replenishing. If the rooster has died or otherwise left the flock his progeny may go on for a few more days as the hens eggs will still be fertile until the sperm packet is depleted.

So, guess I will collect the eggs for the next week, since they were in shipping two days, and let a broody try and hatch them.
Good luck!
Thanks Porkpal, I just washed them. They seem to be very healthy, especially the splash. They smelled terrible. She said because it was cold she didn't want to wash them. They arrived here safely so that's the main thing. Guess I'll keep them in the house a few days more and see how they do, then introduce them to the others. Sure hope my red silkies can behave themselves, they are the mean ones.
On the other hand if I'm going to collect these eggs, I'll have to wait a week to put them in with the others. So far I have two eggs that might be fertile. At that rate I'll get an egg a day, so maybe 8 eggs in all. That'll be about all I could handle anyway. Roosters roosters, who wants a rooster?
"Not I" said the duck.
"Not I" said the cat.
"Not I" said the pig.
Good luck!! I really love that splash... wow!
Thank you Z.
Tomorrow I want to take pictures of them. This blue has a really nice crest. Poor things can't see though. They move their heads up and down slowly trying to see I guess.
Kind of silly isn't it? Buying birds that can't see and then having to use hair tape or tiny rubber bands so they can see.
The blue doesn't seem to feel as well as the splash. The splash is very active, flapping her wings and fights to get away from me. The blue just sits here. Little bit concerned about the blue. She didn't take the trip as well it seems.
Probably I should have waited a few more days to bathe them, but the smell was overwhelming.
Hey, I actually got a decent picture. woohoo
How things have changed in a few days. Now the splash is not doing well, and the blue is all over the yard doing great. After I bathed the splash she hasn't felt well. She must not have been handled much because every time I try to pick her up she flaps her wings and fights me. Guess she is very scared. I don't know if she was hurt, or what. After that, she began to back up in the corner of the box, then outside she just sits there most of the time. No more eggs either.
Anyway, didn't she clean up pretty? I sure hope she's going to be ok. She's eating at least and standing sometimes.
She is very pretty indeed!
Thanks Porkpal, I'm really excited to have her here. Her health seemed better this afternoon, but then a cat got into the yard and I brought her in just to keep her safe. She's kind of helpless if she cannot see.
Make sure to keep an eye if she might be egg bound.. I figure she stopped laying from the stress.. but it's possible...
I hope she snaps out of it soon. a real beauty she is!
LIJ she is just beautiful!!
She is a darling and Squeaky clean too! Shes probably a little traumatized from the trip, and new surroundings! You know how our birds are about routine and their environment. She probably had a Roo she was interested in back home too! Give her time and watch her, she'll regroup and be fine in no time!
Z, you should see pictures of George Mihalik's silkies. He wants $100, $200 and $300 for his, and only sells in pairs or trios. He has some gorgeous birds though. Well, actually George got too sick to care for his birds, and sold half interest to another woman. I have an email from them with pictures, but didn't think I could afford that price, at least not yet.
Thanks Green and Eufaula, and yes, Z I am keeping an eye on her. She's in the box in the house and in the corner again crouched down. If I had it to do over I would not have bathed her for awhile.
If anyone knows of others with good show quality silkies, please dmail me. I'm only interested in adult birds, not eggs. Learned my lesson on that score.
I'd love to see them! I have a soft spot in my heart for silkies.. I don't know much about show birds, other than the basics.. I really am partial to that splash.. wow, really impressive!
Send me an dmail with an email I can forward his pictures to. He sent me quite a few when I thought I could buy one. Then he told me I had to buy 2 or 3, and I backed down.
Or I could post them on here, or would that be cheating? I'm still so confused about etiquette on here. I don't think he'd mind, it would just be free advertisement for him. Still, they are not my pictures, so maybe it wouldn't be right.
I don't see why you can't post.. It's when you are soliciting or promoting your biz... Just to show off some beautiful birds is not doing biz. :) Trust me, I don't have the money to buy no matter how perfect they are! LOL
WOW... they ARE awesome! I love the last pic with the hairdos tooo funny.. Not one of them look happy about it.. but I'm sure it's nice to be able to see!
Oh they are so cute,I have one that might look like that when she or he is full grown,I have a question, when they cost hundreds of dollars are they as hardy as the pet quality or hatchery breeds?
Can never get enough of silkies
They are so precious. I have a rooster with crossed bill, he is doing o.k.
I love all your pretty babies. Thanks for showing.
Heeeeey Charleeeeeeeen!! Welcome girl!
As long as he eats okay a crossed beak just makes him more loveable!
HeyyyyyyyyyyGirlfriendddddddddd!!!! I was just bumbleing around and saw that blue chicken and heart did a flip flop. Now isn't that beautiful??? How the heck are you. I've missed seeing you. Hugs and Charley sends you nuzzles....
Whoo Hoooo! Tell old Charlie not to let Santy think hes a Reindeer and take him to the North Pole!! Miss you too girl!
Yep that Blue Silkie is sure a looker! I only have white ones but they'll do! ( I do have a blue Cochin though)
all mine are regular chickens, but I love them all. Had two ducks and something got one, down to one duck, durn it. they are all pretty, doesn't make any difference. got to pu a top on my outside pen, I know something cae in and got her. Lost a few chickens after I made them larger pen with no top. Probably awks or owls. Love owls so Maybe they will leave other duck alone, til I find it a girlfriend.
