I may be one roo less by tonight. It's not looking good for Jeffery. He was fighting with the others and it appears he got the worst of it. He lost some blood but I think the cold is putting the nail in his coffin. He has some frostbite on his comb and his wattles are very light pink. He was sitting in the back yard looking awful. He tried to get to where I put him a little pile of scratch but he was falling over. His feet were like ice. I have him in a tub in the living room. No need for a top. He is sitting still and quiet. He ate last night but doesn't seem interested this morning. Wouldn't you know it. He is the least annoying of the free range roos. Wish it had been Flame. I hate him.
1 roo less?
Isn't that always the way it seems to go, losing the one closest to you. I think any loss like this is hard. My neighbor just lost his dog to cancer last evening and it was terrible, he was sobbing and there just aren't words for things like this...Hope he gets better my dear...Hay
He is still alive. Doesn't stand up but he eats sitting down. I don't know if he is drinking water but it's there where he can read it if he wants it.
Sounds promising...
He does have a bit of character. I just ahte to see any animal suffer.
Jeffery passed away this evening. He was very skinny like my little bantam hen that died a few months ago. I know he ate well. I fed him seperately every day and watched over him til he finished because the other roos would take his feed. It doesn't seem likely that he would need grit as he was free range and our ground is sandy and full of gravel.
That's just the way it goes sometimes. I have a bantam lavender pullet that is just the target of everyone's aggression.. she is so small and skinny.. but so far, she is still hangin in there.
I'm sorry for your loss, but at least now he can rest in peace.
Like DH said, his last few days he was warm and cared for.
(: ..... You did your best Caj, and he knew it!
I think I would get a hold of that culprit Flame, and segregate him and any more that you worry about! Pick out the least agressive and put with your Hens! He'll toughen up when he knows hes boss!
I am going to eat Flame and the other free range roos. There are 4 of them now.
I have my yard roo, Gumbo, in a seperate pen. I won't put him back with the hens til Spring. I want to let them get fully feathered. He is a BIG EE and they lose feathers pretty bad when he is with them. Him and my little bantam are the only 2 roos I am going to keep.
