More new Baibes

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

7 hatched with 4 being double tufted!!!!! 1 zipped but didn't hatch, 1 fully formed died in shell without pipping, 1 died early on, and 5 didn't develop.
I am going to send you to the pics for the ones on dial up. First 7 are the 1 day old babies then next 8 are the first batch that are a week old. The black one with white on head next to the tufted one is tufted too. Was hard to see when first hatched

Great pitctures I love to look at chicken pictures especially babies

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I took the liberty of copying this one to show what I think is a good example of a roo wing on a chick.. This might be a pullet, as I'm not sure that my method is accurate with Aracauna chicks.. but this is that classic "L" shape I've been trying to describe.

If you can imagine this I have a silkie broody in Dec.,I just keep taking her eggs and puting her outside when the others go out,Hopefully she will get over this foolishness soon, its just to cold to be a mommy.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I don't know yet either but I feel like it is a roo too

(Zone 6b)

Are you talking about the little feathers starting to grow at the base of the wing?

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

OOOh sooo cute!!! More photos , please!
thanks ZZ that "L" shape really showed up, gave me a better idea now of what to look for!!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Eufaula they are here

Yes, the bottom wing feathers come out straight like that, forming a backwards L shape... That is classic roo wing feathers. But see, Aracaunas usually have no tail, so there is that factor missing in this breed for guessing gender. If that was, say an Ameraucana, and had no start of a tail, I'd be convinced it's a roo.
A pullet will get wing feathers faster and they have a > shape... and tail starts.. but not in this case.. (which is a good thing!)

Congrats on the fantastic hatch Donna! Finally, you have what you have been working for so long! I'm happy for you.

(Zone 6b)

Well, that is a perfect picture for that! Be sure and save it, because if you stay on here, I'm sure this subject will come up again and again.

Wonder how long we will be on DG. Probably nobody knows.

Speaking of which, where did Rita run off to?

Here are some pictures of my Wheaton, Blue Wheaton Ameraucuna chicks. They are three weeks. Any guesses?

Are they Ameraucanas or Aracaunas? They seem to be distinctly lacking in tail feathers. Especially chick number two.

Los Gatos, CA

They are Ameracunas. I can take a better picture, and get the whole chick!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

They are too old for me to guess..

but since I can't stand it.. that second one looks like a pullet.. LOL

Richmond, TX

Do they actually have tail feathers?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I think I fried my 18 eggs due last night/today. Temp was 103.4, for how long I don't know. no pips yet but will give them until Monday when it is time to put more Araucana eggs & some Heritage Dels in lockdown

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Nah, they will be okay.. I've done 106 and still got a hatch.. at least I hope they will be! I've had some terrible temps and still got a hatch... You can probably expect more roos though. LOL :( arrgh!

Yeah Porkpal.. they do have tail feathers in those pics, they are just bent down..

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

wow 106 and got a hatch

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Well.. it wasn't for long.. and it was close to day 18.. It takes a while for the inside of the egg to reach that temp.. so if it was an hour or so.. the chances of damage are slim..

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

ended up with 4 living, 3 with tufts yeah!!!, 4 dead in shell fully formed but didn't pip, 2 pipped but died in shell fully formed, 1 died early death, and 7 did not develop

Richmond, TX

Congratulations! It sounds like you did well with the survivors.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Yaaaaaay!!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Doin the happy hatch dance!! Congrats on the tufted yipeeee!

I think hatching chickens is so incredible, When we had our artic freeze three weeks ago it was -4 three days in a row, I had seven eggs in the incubator in my garage and could not get the temp up above 84% I fought with it for a whole day before I realised the cold temps would not allow it to warm up any higher, I took it finally into the house and then forgot I had turned it up so high trying to raise the temps. It went unchecked all day and when I finally did check it, it was up to 112. I told my wife there was no way those eggs would ever hatch, first I froze them, then I cooked them, but it was only two days til hatch and I could not bring myself to throw them out...Long story short four of the seven hatched and I now have four three week olds and am loving them...They are incredible...

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

that is awesomeeeeee!!!!!

I hatched 3 more Araucana and 6 Heritage Dels. 2 died, 1 zipped and died in shell, another pipped and died in shell. Didn't bother the check the other eggs. The first one that I woke up to hatched had a huge butt and kept rolling on it back. nothing I could do for 2 days would keep it right side up. I put it in a cage away from the heat and let it pass. Have one with messed up foot and found one dead this morning. wondering if they are to inbred. They look good and are showing no signs of any illness and are in with all the other babies I hatched. Makes no sense

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

o.k what's going own??? Had the new Del chick dead this morning and 1 1/2 hrs ago I gave all my babies their morning mash. I just went out there and Smurfette is Dead!!!!!!! They are inside, have never been outside and in a heated room that doesn't get below 70 degrees and they also have a heat lamp to get under. Kept in clean cages and given fresh food and water daily. Can newly hatched chicks carry a disease??? they are in with all my new Araucana babies!!!!!

Bridgewater, ME

I have no answer for you but am so sorry, its not to warm is it?I mean can they get away from the heat lamp?

Richmond, TX

I have heard that coccidia can take chicks out alarmingly fast. It often seems to crop up for no reason. Does anyone have diarrhea?

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Oh Donna I am feeling so bad for you! Sometimes I wish they would never even hatch, if all they are going to do is die after a couple of days! WE live and learn and grow! keep trying girlfriend. Just be sure to sterilize everything that the babies touched, and keep going! Heres hoping and wishing you a great hatch next time!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Smurfette was 2 1/2 months old today. The chicks are about 3 or 4 days old. No poopy butt no nothing. all on medicated chick feed. They stay on medicated chick feed until they go outside.
If they get to warm near the light they have another whole cage to go to, to get away. The room temp is staying between 70 to 80 degrees with the heater on depending on how cold it is outside

Richmond, TX

???? Medicated feed should prevent coccidia. I hate it when they die and you never know why.

(Zone 6b)

I had babies die of mites. It was terrible. I brought the remaining ones in, and saw little black specks crawling off them. Horrible experience.

I wondered if they came in on the eggs I bought. They sure killed them QUICK. They didn't live 24 hrs. The ones I brought in and treated were fine.
