Whoa. I just bought one of these palms -- just a one-gallon at Green Thumb. I was doing some research on the growing habit when I found your picture here. Is that a variegated one, or is it behind something else that is variegated? Cool pic in any case.

No, that's the underside of the leaves showing along with the tops of the leaves.. undersides are whitish. It is a great looking palm. Takes a while to get there, though, and not a good palm to grow in a windy spot (winds shred it badly)

Excellent. Is it wise for me to plant my one-gallon in the ground, or should I pot it into a three-gallon and wait for it to get bigger before I plant it out in your opinion? That's good information about the wind. We seem to get a lot of it here. I'll make sure it is protected now.

What a cool looking palm. I have a Kerriodoxa elegans seedling that I bought because I really like the white undersides of the leaves, but I keep it in my enclosed patio because I have very little shade to work with.

that will be the slowest growing palm you will likely ever own, as it is super marginal even in the most perfect climates of San Diego. Plant that where you will not be unhappy that it will never grow an inch. As for the SAbal, I would eventually move it up into a 5 gal, and in another 3-4 years a 15 gal and leave it there until it's looking like it's busting out of the pot... THEN it's ready to plant out. That will be in about 8 years (maybe sooner if things go well and you water it well, and give it lots of miracle gro).
