Brug pollination

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Met with a person on Friday who says his brugs are pollinated by bats. ICK!! I've seen hummingbirds on the red ones but bats??

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I thought bats ate bugs & fruit. I never knew they would pollinate flowers.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

maybe they are seeing the hummingbird moths in the dark and thinking they are bats??

(Zone 6a)

We need a brug pollination expert to describe step by step just how it is done....for those of us not yet versed in the art:)

Owen this post by Brugman is a big help - http://davesgarden.com/showthread/72431.html - I've only had 3 flowers open - but I pollinated them just to see what happens. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Owen,
Did you find your HG yet? Brugman knows his stuff.

(Zone 6a)

Nope, not yet, Gloria:) Think I could cross-pollinate one of them there brugs now though, after reading Brugman's instructions:) If I am lucky, I will have a bloom or two in a couple of years:)

Owen,
I just noticed a baby coming up on the bottom of mine if you just want to wait for it to get bigger. LMK It could take a few weeks or more.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

if I can pollenate and get seed pods (I have them) anyone can. It's much easier than I ever would have thought.

tiG,
Same here..who would have ever thought I could come up with a Brug as nice as Jessie Noel....not me.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I can't wait til she blooms!!!

(Zone 6a)

What is the best bright pink to get if we can't get that hot pink one? Any suggestions from you brug addicts? haha

Owen,
I'm going to post one on the Burg and dat contest forum...don't know where the picture came from and what kind of Brug it is but it sure is pretty.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Glory, post it in the regular photo forum.

For those of you that are interested in Brugmans instructions on Hybridizing go back up to Poppysue posting and click on her hyperlink.

I have one question about that thread. When Eric said they are self infertile, can they or can't they be crossed to parents. Was never sure in that thread.

Yes, The hybrids can go back to the parents because they are only 50% of the parents....is that right. I crossed Whiskers which was a Aurea Gold X Charles Grimaldi then took the Whiskers pollen and put it on the Charles Grimaldi and got Jessie Noel...goodness...I think that's what I did. LOL
Brugman correct me if I'm wrong...Please

Brugman was right. I crossed some Jutner orange to itself. It looked like it was making pods, but they were empty. I crossed some other blooms to Frosty Pink and have three HUGE seedpods. If I can do it, any body can!!

Callia,
Isn't this fun? I just love running around with my Q tips and Pollen..my DH thinks I have completely lost my mind. LOL

Gorry
yes, now every time I find a new bloom, I have to go collect some pollen and see if I can get one more seed pod. The workers at the green house just laugh at me and say "oh, she's pollinating again!!" They know to keep customers out of the brug house and they can't sell anything in there because it might have a seed pod.
They call it the "Jungle House" because I've got all the tropicals in there too. I planted my passion vines in the same pot with the brugs, so I would have more room and the passion vines will have something to climb on. A landscaper gave me some huge pots that work great. DH started to tell him we didn't want them, then decided I could use them. I'm glad he was thinking of me :)

Brugman..a question for you. I was asked this question and I didn't know how to answer it. If you cross a Versicolor X Insignis is it called a Versicolor Hybrid or a Insignis Hybrid?

doesnt the pod producing parent plant determine the name?
just guessing
