I have to post a warning: do not look at these pictures if you are sensitive or squeamish because the bird I need ID'd is a dead one and it is tangled up on a cactus..... I was horrified to see it but I am also curious to know what it is because I've never seen anything like it. I was at a cabin in Leakey TX the first week of November when I saw it. The cabin sits on the Frio river. Leakey TX is West of San Antonio, North of Uvalde.... and yes it is a very small town in the middle of nowhere! It is near Garner State Park and Lost Maples State Natural Area.
My best guess is some kind of sandpiper... perhaps a pectoral sandpiper on migration?
CLOSED: Need bird ID - photos below, but read the warning 1st.....
American Woodcock
They migrate at night, and have something of a reputation for flying into things, unfortunately. Far from the first one recorded in this sort of situation.

Thanks!! So does a dead bird count for my life list ;)
Sorry, no! Dead birds don't count.
