Because the appearance of the blooms changes throughout the seasons, it's impossible to tell that the cultivar is. There are at least 2 cultivars with the word Velvet in it — Pink Velvet and Velvet Rose. Since the the word Velvet is followed by another, it is probably Velvet Rose, but to be safe, perhaps the person who sent it to you will remember what he sent. Otherwise, it should really become a noid. I have a number of noids who were formerly named cultivars except that the label faded. Rather than adding to the number of mislabeled Brugs, they became noids.

It looks like the tip of the bloom dried out while still in the calx or just as it emerged.

the bloom never opened

Veronica mentioned Velvet Rose in the first reply.

Ken,
Thank you for mentioning that. I suspected that's what she was. Velvet Rose is old enough to be circulating freely, but didn't emphasize it because naming plants with missing names, even partial ones is the first step toward a naming mistake and that should be a no-no. There are way too many mis-identified Brugs already. It's always possible that a working name was used on a Brug someone was considering for registry, but didn't do so. However, the Brug and or the name stuck around.

Brandon, FL(Zone 9b)

Yes she did....but I recently found the name about the same time ....until t hen..I wasn't for sure.
