Has anybody seen or grown the Shredded White Brug? In a nursery near me is one for sale. I wonder if it smells good, and if it blooms readily.
Thanks for your input.
Brugmansia Candida Shredded White
Nobody seems to care to answer, can anybody remove this thread and spare me further embarrassment?
mrs_colla,
Tough week to get through! I had it but, it didn't fare well last year when it was eaten by grasshoppers. They seemed to love some Brugs more than others and apparently, they loved it to death. It never got to bloom for me so I don't know anything about its fragrance, but it is supposed to be fragrant. There is a comment about it in the PlantFiles:

It shouldn't require any special treatment. It will bloom in flushes as any other Brug.
It is a Brugmansia candida, a natural hybrid between B. aurea and B. versicolor. Therefore it's growth habits are in between the two. According to Preissel and Preissel, it is very fragrant which it gets from its versicolor ancestry. The blooms tend to hang down or nodding. The flushes are not as distinct as those in the versicolor, but it still blooms in flushes.
I hope this helps you decide.
Bettydee, Thanks so much for your reply. I have a ton of grasshoppers, so I will most likely pass on it :-)

Year before last, I lost many of my Brugs to the 12 species of grasshoppers we have and to the sheer numbers. By lost, I mean they were eaten down to the ground or completely striped of their bark and didn't come back. There were so many of them that we didn't mow the grass all late spring through mid fall. After despairing of the situation, I finally stumbled upon what seemed like a miracle. I decided to try Ortho Max Fruit and Vegetable Insect Killer. It is safe enough to use on fruit and vegetables close to harvest and it is a pain to apply because you have to keep pulling on the handle to get a few minutes of spray, but the results are worth the pain. It can't be purchased in the concentrated form. It is a contact spray with a few weeks of residual killing power. It's ability to protect Brugs was amazing. You will still have some damage, but this year, I didn't have the mass kill I had prior to its use. It has to be re-applied when you start to see missing pieces of twigs or leaves. Because I tend to spray the entire plant when I water during the summer to help cool them down, I have had to re-apply about every 3 weeks, but it's worth the effort.
I would pick up one of each — spray and plant. LOL
