That display should help folks collecting seed not to waste their time on the "rattlers".

All I'd add is that typically Aesculus species seeds are short lived (lose viability relatively quickly) if not planted right away or stored well.

Thanks for the compliments. The seed should also be planted with the "eye" buried, as that is where the sprouting starts. The seed should be half buried in the ground according to this very informative guide from USDA. http://plants.usda.gov/plantguide/pdf/cs_aeca.pdf This also points out that they are POISONOUS without processing. I often wonder how many people died before the culture learned which plant not to repeat the process on. Also, how did they figure out how to process various foods? Who was brave enough to eat this stuff after leaving it in the stream for a week?
