Dropping Leaves

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

My plumeria is dropping it's leaves and is still outdoors in pot. Should I bring it inside or can it be left outside. I've also read not to water. How long should I not water and when do I stop/start watering? All advise is welcome. Thank you. Dorothy

Dorothy,

I don't know how cold does your winter get to be? If it gets below 32F. degrees. Your plants are going to need winter protection. In my zone, I treat mine as container planting, some have successfully plunge them into the ground in the spring, and dig them up in late fall, then keep the plummies in dormant state (withholding water and sun light and frost-free area over the winter months), then resume their watering and fertilization in early spring after last frost outdoor. I hope that helps.

Happy gardening.

Lily, when you say no sun light, do you keep them in a dark room or just no direct sunlight?

Sharon, I understand lot of people simply keep them in a non lit area like a basement. I myself keep them in a modified greenhouse with supplemental light. And fans to aid circulation, water ect. It's kept growing all year round. I move them out to the garden when temp. is higher than 50F. degrees in the spring.

I do not have a basement but I do have a guest bedroom that currently has not planned visitors. I have two so I think I will move them in there. This is my first year of holding over Plumeria.

Thanks for the help.

That should work, especially if you have some indirect sun light through the window. Currently I have one that's in flowers in my great room. Plummie is pretty adaptible. You will enjoy them.
