This past spring I promised two dear people in Brazil and England that when a plant I had produced some seeds I would send them some. Well, now I have the seeds but was surprised to hear that seeds sent to Lucia had been destroyed by her government and she dropped out of the RR.I wanted to make up a nice little surprise package but now am afraid they won't make it. Have the other countries gotten stricter recently? Do you think my seeds will reach their destination?

I don't think it's a case of Brazil getting tougher. I've been in touch in the last few years with traders in Chile and Argentina who told me that their governments are very strict ..in fact one friend was called in to 'explain' herself for importing seeds. As far as I know, many South American countries do not want people to import seeds. That's not to say it isn't done... but only if they escape the eyes of officialdom .
There is no problem with sending seeds to England , however.

I do live in Chile (for a while), and I do get the seeds (I even got some in-vitro stuff) and I do send seeds, NO PROBLEM , you just have to be "diplomatic" about it, so you pack them in an unsuspicious manner.
The more strict laws are Australia's . I know, I'm an aussie citizen ,and I did receive seeds in Australia as well, so all depends on the enveloppe......
Cristina
Cristina what kind of envelope would you suggest? I thought that might help if we knew the best way to send them. Thanks
Hello, my dear friend.
It is good to hear that you worry about me.
It is true that one envelope sent to me was kept by authorities and the seeds were wasted. However this was an isolated case and I have been trading with a lot of friends from DG and receiving worderfull seeds.I just ask them not to mention seeds on the envelope.
I dropped from the RR. was because ,in no way I would compromise the success of this trade ,if there was a faint possibility that the seeds would not be safe.
Sometimes the mail arrives incredibly fast and sometimes it takes longer but overall I received all the seeds I expected which makes me look forward receiving yours .
We are in spring now and thanks to my dear friends, my garden will be heaven in a few weeks.
I would also like to tell you that through DG I met really wonderfull people and that it is a joy to hear from all of you.

I sent seeds to Canada, and a cutting. Funny it should of showed up by now. Is there a problem there with receiving seeds from the US? I did have to sign what was in it for a customs form. I put seeds on the list. Oh well. I didnt know what to do.
got some through last week to Canada, and yes, I counted my blessings:)
bare root no soil. I wrapped them in water retaining gel, but my friend there said it wasn't necessary, they would have gotten there fine with the paper towel routine. His got to me in four days, mine took about a week. Neither one of us used global priority or anything special.
Checked with the post office today and the only country that is restricted at this time is Egypt. I sent some seeds out of the country and had to claim them on a customs form, but other than that, no worries.
Thanks everyone for your input. I guess my two friends that I promised seeds to this summer will be receiving them.I'll take the chance that they will make it there safely.
The information I got from our PO about sending to Canada is that if the package weighs over 1 pound, I have to fill out a customs form. Something sent in bubble wrap is no problem. Well, that is what they say anyway. I have sent one package and one bubble envelope and have not heard from either recipient. Just never know, I guess.

Brugie...my PO here said anything other than an envelope will have to go through with a customs form. I had a very small box...and I had to fill out the form. (just in case you have to go thru with it too)
my postmaster makes me fill them out for everywhere. but she is really trying to look out for me, so it doesn't come back.
I put seeds in a regular envelope usually wrapped in some paper so it looks like a letter. that way there is no need to say what is in the envelope.

Mistyc : I've been a bit busy, so only to day a check the thread, my apologies.
I used ordinary envelopes, I cut a thick paper (thickness similar to greeting cards / postcard)that can be folded in the middle and can be put easily into the envelope, I stick the seeds packages on this surface,in such a way that they don't move or if the letter is shaked, there isn't a sound coming from the envelope.
I got an idea : I do not have many seed, but I may look what is what you are looking for and we trade, so you see how do I do it.
Cristina.
