bees and hummer feeders

Is this a good thing or not? They are not yellow jackets or wasps. Just good old honey bees.

It isn't harmful to the bees, but the hummers will not feed as much. It is usually an indication of a leak in your feeder. I had to use a water hose late in the evening to make the bees leave this one so I could take it down for inspection. It was slightly seeping from the seam.

The situation won't harm the hummingbirds unless you start getting bee casualties. I don't know how they got in there but I've had bees stuck in the reservoir and the bee guards.

I found in my case the issue wasn't leaking because my only leaking feeder didn't attract bees. I read something about bees and wasp being attracted to yellow so I tried switching to an all red feeder. Worked well until I discovered it was leaking onto my poor neighbors deck. Now I have a non-leaking all red plastic and glass hummingbird feeder with no bee issues.

Actually since I've switched I haven't seen one bee or wasp near the feeder and I have a wasp nest above my deck.
