Things to do in SA

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

I'll be in San Antonio for Thanksgiving week. We plan on going to SeaWorld, museum to see Egyption exhibit and of course the riverwalk but my daughter will be at work Mon-Wed so I thought I'd go out and do something with the grandkids. Any suggestions?

Antique Rose Emporium is not too far. Don't know if there will be many bloomers but you could always call first. I think their botanical gardens are very nice!

Lackland has a small museum on Air Force history http://www.museumsusa.org/museums/info/1167934

Not sure how old your grandchildren are, but the Children's Museum is actually very nice.. http://www.sakids.org/home.aspx

Brackenridge Park has a small zoo and things for children (playground, sports courts)
http://www.wildtexas.com/texas-parks/brackenridge-park-san-antonio - I haven't been here, but have heard the Japanese garden is beautiful.

The Alamo is neat unless they've already seen it. :)

Eat at La Fonda's, Chester's Hamburgers and Alamo Cafe!! LOL

The SA Zoo is awesome! The Japanese Gardens are across the street from the zoo and there's also a train that runs through Breckenridge Park. The Witte Museum is on the backside of the zoo. If you go to the zoo there's a great little hole-in-the-wall restaurant on Broadway that has awesome burgers and onion rings.

What part of town does your daughter live in? That will determine a lot of what's near to do so you don't have to travel a lot (traffic is horrid sometimes).

19,17 and 10.

My daughter just moved Halloween weekend so I'm not sure she's in now. We've been to the Alamo but I wouldn't mind going again. They love SeaWorld so they's probably like the zoo too.

The 19 yr old works and her idea of sightseeing would probably be the malls. The 17 yr.old probably thinks he's too cool to hang out with his Mimi so it's most likely me and the 10 yr old granddaughter.

Brackenridge is great. Probably will still be pretty pleasant outdoor weather at Thanksgiving.

There's a shopping area, Las Villitas, near the old downtown. It's not quite the mall, but might be close enough to let the teen rationalize hanging with grannie. (There's tourist mall downtown, too, if you have to make a deal. And IMAX movie.)

I think the lower parts of the mission trail are interesting. (It sounds like these guys are new enough to town that they wouldn't have done it to death.) Some of those buildings are still used as parish churches, with really a little community around them that's a different sort of culture than AR. Advent won't start until the following weekend, but sometimes they jump the gun on decorating.

The river there itself is more interesting than downtown, too, I think. There's one segment where the double-decker irrigation system the mission folks built still functions. They're in the middle of a reclamation project to restore pre-urban habitat along 10 miles or so http://www.sanantonioriver.org/mission_reach/mission_reach.php

Of course the most important thing is spending time with the family. SA is a pretty laid back place for as big a city as it is. Yall will fine, with plenty to do together.

Yeah, they've only been there a year this passed Aug. and everybody has been to busy with work and school to have done anything to death.

My daughter did mention the IMAX

There's also a lot to do downtown near the Alamo. There's the Hertzberg Museum, the Wax Museum as well as the Institute of Texas Cultures and Hemisphere. You can ride to the top of Hemisphere Tower. You can also ride on the barges on the river. That's a fun way to see the Riverwalk. There is a visitor's center across the street from the Alamo. If you go to the Alamo, stop in at the Visitor's center and get all the info you can.

There used to be a great pizza place on the Riverwalk. I think it was named Michael's. They had great pizza!

Well,I'll have to pass on the tower. I'm scared of heights.

Just south of downtown, right off of I-35 is El Mercado. That's a fun thing to stroll through. You can eat at Mi Tierra, which is yummy! There's a produce/farmer's market and then several vendors have shops set up. It's always a fun thing to do.

hope I have time to see lots of stuff...sometimes a week just doesn't like time enough
