Geese question

(Zone 6b)

I was watching the ducks and geese fly south for the winter and I wondered about something. Knew someone here would have the answer.

If you raise geese will they automatically know to fly north and fly south, or do they stay where they were hatched?

I was thinking it would be kind of fun to hatch out birds and just let them go, but maybe they wouldn't know what to do.

If they are domesticated and not raised with wild birds, will they do what nature intended, or is that instinct damaged?

if you purchase migrating geese they come pinioned or yes they would fly off. it is instinct.
Live stock geese are heavy nonflying except for Chinese. They can fly if they want to but usually don't because they are being fed and having their needs met

was it you who wanted to see pics of my coops??? I found some last night and will take more today of the newer smaller ones

(Zone 6b)

Yes I would love to see the coops.

Thanks for the answer about the geese.

Since you seem to know, are the birds I see flying that look like they have really long necks, are they the geese?

Geese do have long necks, normally fly in approximate Vs, and call as they fly. So do sandhill cranes, but their voices are different.

PP is right. Most likely Cranes or Herons

Didn't get new pics today of smaller coops or new ugly Silkies. Busy winterizing the coops with more pine straw DH raked up for me today and putting up plastic. Wow it was 33 here this morning. We don't usually get that kind of cold until mid to late December

These pics were taken in late April

last one for today. This is the largest and a dual coop. The coop is divided by wire. One side is 4' and the other is 8'. You can also see the the dividing panel with runs the length of the run which is about 25 to 30' long. It is a massive cage built and divided into 2. Larger side for the Large Fowl and Smaller side for the Bantams but the bantams have 2 coops one on top of the other. The bottom one is where I have the nesting boxes and there is also room for the birds if they just want to be in there away from the Randy Roo's. 12' has tin roof and is 8' tall the remander is 4' high to the end of the runs

Thanks DonnaB, those are SO NICE! It's so obvious you have a great place there, and so pretty. Trees even!

Surely I can get something kind of similar to that. It's exactly what I want, wire and tall, tall enough to walk inside.

the easy way to do it is build the walls on the ground wire and all. Then you will need help to raise them up and put them together. Lay them out how you want it. Screw a board at top and bottom to hold them in place. Flip it over, roll out your wire over it and staple away. Air Stapler is very nice to have. Flip it back over and remove the brace boards. Flip it back over and put the brace board on the wire side and your are done. You can make a 12' x 8' wall in about 2 hrs. Put your coop wall boards on the outside. They guys we hired to build the coop and run all the top wire didn't listen to me and put the board on the inside, now I can keep the rats out. They go through the wire and run down the board between the wire and back of coop. They also stood the boards up on the roof instead of laying them flat, rats that way too. DH is going to have to cut boards and insert between every rafter to close it up to keep them out, also will hold in the heat over winter. Right now the heat lights are just heating the outside because it is all going right out under the roof grrrrrrrr. Wish we had been able to do it all ourselves. DH started having work every weekend so we had to hire some guys to finish for me

Donna thanks for sharing, I noticed that your feeders are on cinder blocks does that really help? I have some birds that are trying to jump in and eat and are knocking over the feeders...

it works well for keeping the dirt they sling everywhere out lol Mine are all on blocks or hanging from a rope or wire about level with their chest. So are their waters.
