My new Rhipsalis pachyptera

Phelan, CA(Zone 8b)

Just received this one today from an ebay seller. The soil looks and feels very heavy to me. I am concerned about rot. Should I go ahead and repot it in equal parts cactus mix, perlite and orchid bark? Or is it all right in this mix? Haven't had one of these before. And if I should repot it, how long should I wait? Here's a pic. Thanks in advance!

I am sorry you feel that way, sometimes I bump my posts only to get dozens of answers a few hours later.

Most rhips and Epis are grown in a wide variety of mixes, I have bought one that appeared to be potted in dirt. I personally now like to use coir and meduim orchid bark, but am looking at semi-hydro and hydroton for my next mix.

If the soil seems heavy and the plant looks good, I would leave it now as it should be maintained dormant until spring hits, then I would repot it. But you could repot now and not see any loss.

Don't give up Seaecho I've noticed since its time for epis to go dormat for the winter alot of the experts have gone over to the cactus forum, thats because I think it must be time for the cactus to bloom, although being from the midwest all of my cactus are sleeping for the winter. Come spring the epi thread will be going crazy again.

Thanks, you guys! AnalogDog, I will go ahead and repot it in spring. I'll have to look for coir (never bought it before) and I do have the orchid bark, so I'm all set. Acts, I have noticed a lot more posts on the cactus forum than here. Its nice to know there will be more posts here in spring!

Yes, this forum comes and goes with folks mostly talking Epiphyllum flowers, Rhipsalis folks join in too, but your best bet is at Epiforums.com
