I found a bunch of these guys on my Passion Flower vine. I have tried looking them up on line, but haven't found a match. I really tried. Does anyone know what they are? I have four photos to send.
Any help would be appreciated.

This is photo #2 of 4. I caught this caterpillar chomping away at a leaf.

All I can say is that is the nastiest cat I've ever seen! The species should survive a loooooong time!

Looks like a Gulf Fritillary. They eat passion vine and their range includes some of California.

bariolio, lets just say for the first time ever, I used my garden gloves while picking them up.
Then I put them back, because 2gardenkate is right. They are Gulf Fritillary's. Thank you for providing that link. I found eggs and the Crysalis and even better got a photo of the b.fly. Will
post below.
Thank you both for your comments, and for helping me out.
After the army cut worms invaded my gh, I never hoped for anything as beautiful as this. I bet the birds don't eat these guys. Too spikey and probably taste bad. LOL.

I have lizards that hang out near my passion vines and then there are the paper wasps that feed their young on caterpillars. However in my area the GF are pretty numerous and rebound nicely.

We don't have the same kind of wasps, but the cold weather here is keeping them away. Most of the lizards are afraid of the cats and don't hang out on the back porch where the passion vine is right now.
I imagine that the birds wouldn't enjoy eating them. I'm pretty sure they taste bad. Spikes are intimidating too. The meat wasps we do have would kill them if they found them injured. Horrible wasps.
Thanks for the extra info on the cats, Sheila. : - )
You dmailed me about the same time that 2gardenkate also helped me I.D. it and the link shows the same eggs and Chysalis and B.fly. BTW, the eggs are turning from yellow to brown.
Thanks you all! : - )
