TX Native Cacti

Arlington, TX

Anyone have experience with the hardiness of native species? I have found some conflicting information. What cactus do well in zone8? I found the ID of an unknown (mamallaria potsii) and it is listed as zone 9 yet it is growing in my yard for 3 years including the cold of last winter.

and a Cholla cactus http://wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=CYIMI
I leave them both outside, and no problem.

I forgot about the Spineless Prickly Pear, that is hardy outside too.

No experience really, just wanted to say that I'm glad I'm not the only one who takes pics by their sink full of dishes! :)

LOL well I could lie and say that was an unusual thing but we do eat at home and sometime the dishes are actually in the sink. My mess is not an embarassment to me and I want to know who is growing some rarer native cactus. I have a large cholla and it scares me since my last encounter which kept me from bending 2 fingers for several months. I like the lace cactus and definately want some of those. The one pictured is small and I hope to find it a could sunny place so it will begin growing and flowering again. I put it under lights this winter because of the small pot size I put it into.

I ALWAYS have dishes in my sink and I just snap away with my pics, so it doesn't bother me either. We eat at home, too, and sometimes I would rather be out in the garden than in the kitchen doing dishes. That's work for a rainy day like today. :)

I didn't even notice the dishes I guess I was too disracted by the wine bottles.

Is there a connection between wine and dirty dishes...maybe LOL.

Hey newton! Remember the Cholla you gave me? I planted it with my bare hands and got stuck about 15 times but I forgot to mention to you. I have a natural immunity to stings, bites, venom, etc; so no problems for me stabbing myself with Cholla, Pricky Pear, wasps, scorpions....

Sorry you get hurt by them.

I know it will do well, they are pretty easy. I have been stuck with many cactus but there is something about those or maybe because it was so deep and in the joints that really affected me. I keep my distance from that plant.

We've got plenty of those in our pasture, if anyone wants a "start." LOL. I tell DH not to mow over them because it only starts new ones, but he forgets or can't see them in the tall grass/weeds and every little piece makes roots.

I have 2 kinds of prickly pear but don't know much about their taxonomy. One is the spineless kind and it is very easy to grow, the other is one I "collected" at a resort in OK and it is a nice dark bluish green. What I am really looking for are some of the small species, like horse crippler, that grow mostly in West TX but will probably do well here with a little extra care.
