We had frost here in SE Oklahoma but don't think it killed much at all so how much if any did Y'all get ...Sending along apic of some of the fall color which seems to be either late or not at all this year
frost
No frost for us, just down to the low 40s.
We are expecting a low of 52.
We are expecting a low in the mid 30s. I covered some stuff because we always get a little colder out here. I didn't cover the veggie garden though and I hope I don't regret it.
Mid 30s here tonight too but the ground temps are still warm enough that it won't be cold long enough to do any damage.
After all, it was mid 90s two days ago. Sounds confident anyway ~ lol
That's what I was thinking I hope we're right. LOL
Yes, we are all hoping that it won't get seriously cold really soon, I have so many plants to get situated and protected that I don't even want to think about it. This is just too soon!!!
Yesterday there was frost on the Gourds out back but the Brugs on the benches were fine. I could not take a chance for last night and put most tenders under cover. I have not been out this morning, it's tooooo cooooold.
Don't you just hate it? I surely hate to see the growing season end, and so much to do, so many plants to protect, I guess I'm just not ready for it.
I was glad to see the frost ,I have been told that some relly cool temps helps to sweeten some of the more bitter fall veggies like the mustard greens ..Boy I do hope that is true they be a little bitter to suit me ..
Bringing back memories of being on the mountain. Hanging the green tomatoes, putting up apples, collecting Pine Nuts and then break time.
Thanks
Well,
It didn't freeze here. I slept in so I have no idea how cold it got. I haven't even planted my fall garden because my summer garden is in the way and still doing great. I'm working on enlarging it this weekend, maybe.
Our low was 44º and that was chilly enough for me! LOL We've been pulling out veggies from the veggie garden this morning. Got my passion vine planted on the fence. Hope it doesn't freeze!
if it doesn't make it i will bring you another in spring round up!
just checked the 10 day forcast---after all i did just recently plant tomatoes --no frost for us in the next ten days
Yeah, it's plenty warm still here. And super dry - .03" for all of Oct! (Right here, other parts of Austin did a little better.) Hopefully we'll get a nice good soak before any freeze.
We have had frost the last two mornings. Yesterday was 34.4 and this morning 32.4. The tender plants out in the open are gone, but have some begonias up close to the house that did not get bitten.
I had frost that same night. Nothing about a frost warning on local TV weather. In fact they didn't even mention 30's for that evening. Lost a couple of rows of radishes but the rest was mulched in with grass clippings already. Would have liked to have known as I was looking forward to those radishes; but, oh well! I'll just plant some more and see what happens.
no frost here yet, but thinking maybe one tonight. On the recommendation of Wildseed, I sowed wildflower seed for larkspur and red poppies and some seedlings are up...also have some ornamental kale up about a half inch. What will the frost do to those? I also have sweet pea plants come up from seed in containers. Should those be protected from frost? I brought them inside tonight, but don't want to keep them in. I have never grown them before so I know nothing about them.
I gathered a few radishes yesterday and my peppers are producing like crazy, we ( 2 old folks) can't eat them as fast as they are making. Still a bunch on the plants, I hope they will be alright .
I harvested nearly a bushel of japanese persimmons that I need to do something with. Anyone got a favorite recipe that uses more than a half cup?....I have one for cookies and one for bread I thought I'd try tomorrow. That should use up about a cup of pulp. I tried using the pulp like pumpkin and making a soup with chicken broth and some other veggies.......it's edible but not the best thing I have ever tried.
And then.......my freezer in the garage went out..musta been out a couple of days before I noticed it. Most of the large cuts are meat are fine and still partly frozen.....but I had put up a ton of beautiful peaches and they were thawed soft, so I quickly cooked up a couple of large cobblers and peach pies...no other room to freeze we will have to eat them ( O that's too bad) ......but, I will sure be wishing I had peaches this Thanksgiving and Christmas. I am giving away cooked cakes and pies to some neighbor friends. I have a new freezer coming soon, maybe tomorrow, this one was not worth the money to repair.......a side by side, 15 years old that I can remember. The appliance man made us a good deal on a newer used model. I have a nice one in the house, just used the older one for backup but both were full to the gills......it's been a fun week.
Bless your heart, I am sorry you had to use your special foods ahead of time, it is so upsetting when things like that happen, but it is nice to see you have a good attitude about it.
Peppers don't take cold well, like tomatoes. If the Kale were bigger I think it would be ok but seedlings in general are fragile by nature.
Sorry about the freezer. I lost one twice and didn't realize til it was rotten. What a stinky mess that was.
Bummer about the freezer, sharondippity! I'm looking for a new one too. My parents gave me their's some time ago and it has operated very well for me for years but is now starting to show some signs of wearing down. I think they bought it in 1968 so I guess I have no complaints! All it really needs in a new gasket for the lid but Sears says they don't have one any more. I may be stuborn and see if I can find one elsewhere. It really doesn't seem right to get rid of it after all these years!
Hmm, I think I would have refrozen the peaches. The texture is gone, but sounds like they weren't at bacteria-growing temperature for their to be a health risk. Don't forget about smoothies as you're using them up.
http://www.food.com/recipe/sauteed-persimmons-with-green-beans-with-chives-13420 is something a little different with persimmons. I've got some other bread/cakes ones that I like if you want them. You can freeze the pulp.
I signed up for the Weather Channels' desktop weather allerts for my zip code as my local TV channels don't seem to issue frost warnings. The National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued a freeze/frost warning for rural areas in my zip code, 75410, for tonight. That would be the ENTIRE zip code since I don't think we have anything remotely close to a suburban area =D!
Thought I'd pass that along......
Sharon-I sowed my larkspur and poppies directly in the garden and some that self sowed. From here on out they are on their own, I have never covered them, but I'm not sure about containers?? Sweet Peas should be fine. You can always call Wildseeds they have always been very helpful to me.
Lisa
got a light frost this morning and the seedlings look fine....wish I had thought about makeing smoothies or daquaries from the peaches...too late now..I did get the new used freezer in, a real nice almond colored side by side with ice maker and water dispenser It is same size and looks as good as the $2000 stainless in my house........good price at less than 500 and at least a 90 day warranty, it seems fine. Saved a bunch of meat
I had never planted ornamental kale before and didn't know much about it......I just scattered seed around as a border in my new beds........they are coming up real thick. Can I thin and move some of them to other areas or containers maybe? They will be way too close to grow as they are, I had tons of seed gifted from a friend asn scattered them all. Some of the deep red and some of the pale green/white curly looking. I sure hope it does well. The weather here warms up too quickly in spring to enjoy it very long before it bolts so I am hoping to get some winter beauty from it. Fall is pretty here and we are not supposed to have another frost for a week or so. Lost the 4 o clocks and the canna and the summer phlox for the season but the more hardy stuff still looks good.
Sure you can thin the Kale, they are very hardy.
Best turn the heat up a tad bit tonight the forecast is for upper 20s so that will bring ole Jack Frost out of hiding ..Seems like the cold front is a east-west sort of front and is heading south ,My forecast is from McAlester so it bee heading right down 75 to DFW...
Yeah I heard that..closed the door to the greenhouse tonight. I brought in most of my tenders in containers last night so I am somewhat prepared. I hope it stays on 75 that's a bit east of here and sometimes it does make a difference. I am closer to 35 which goes right through the heart of Ardmore, Marietta, Thackerville, Gainesville and farther south to DFW. I know it's gonna be winter but I'd like to postpone it as long as possible.
Me too, I spent the whole day moving pots around yesterday, was quite tired but glad to get it done.
24° on my back porch so I guess that pretty well take care of the frost question==McAlester which is west of Talihina has a slightly warmer temp showing at 34°
It was 40 here this morning, so we escaped.
how does a freeze work? when folks say "hard freeze" what is that?
i am so much wanting those tomatoes to make it and it looks like no freeze for next 10 days--but if it hits 32 is that it? can temps in the high 30's hurt plants? i haven't brought anything in yet (and i end up bringing in a LOT) because i haven't heard about a freeze but will low temps hurt the potted plants?
It was 33 here so we did get some frost, but I brought most of mine in last night. They will be in for 2 days then back outside for most of them except the citrus and bougie. They are in for the winter. I'm actually surprised that the bougie stayed out as long as it did. It usually gets mad when it gets below 50. Stupid plant lol I have had it for 4 years now and it is crazy.
Tomatos can survive a light frost and to me a hard freeze means the water in the doggy bucket freezes over at least a 1/2 " or so but the bad news is the tomatos will not set fruit with temps below 56° or that is the case with most varieties ,some newer hybrids will do much better in that regards...
well when the temps are higher durring the daylight hours it will sstill set fruit? or has the low temps stopped all new fruit setting?
Mine still set fruit. According to the thermometer we got below 32* last night but my beans didn't freeze?? They are the only thing that I didn't cover. Right now my garden looks like a tent city.
a hard freeze is usually one that stays a bit past sunup, or at 32 for a certain amt of hrs. a lite frost hits at dawn and gone by sunup, clear skies mean cold, cold. Hard frosts usually were 2nd wk of Nov in Okla, but, closer to the desert is also colder temps fast.
If they set fruit, tomatoes, you may be more dependent on how much sun, not the cold, but is time to set the lites and wrap the plants or get them indoors, this wont last long, and cold fronts roll in EVERY 2-3 days, 1 small, 1 larger, clear skies more cold, clouds keep earth warmer temps. LUCK ALL
freeze here this A.M......the last of the summer veggie garden, I pulled up the pepper plants loaded with peppers and took off a bunch of small still green tomatoes from their blacken foliage....I am in 7A
