Coop modifications in case of hatching!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I've been waiting patiently for these Serama babiez, and I found one that hatched yesterday... Unfortunately, my bright idea of tile floors in the nesting area, and the broody's idea that she wants NO shavings under her.. cause this baby to be splay legged bad.. He couldn't get any traction at all and his legs were sliding all over.. I hope it's not too late to save his lil legs.. I brought him in.. and will see what I can do.
I love partridge colored chicks!! Pictures soon..

Anyway.. the point of my post is... If you have a slippery floor in your coop, make sure to move the broody before she hatches anything!

Good point!

Oh well, this was probably one of those things that it wouldn't have made a difference.. I'm thinking this chick may have more than just a leg problem.. There are more to hatch, but there are 2 broody hens and they keep trading places and eggs..

I put them in a box, I don't want to take any more chances... I REALLY want these babiez!

I've never seen birds that seem to co-hatch and trade eggs like seramas do. I am sure others do it sometimes but it seems to be a frequent phenomonon with seramas. ZZs what are your plans for the hatching area? will you keep the tile or use something else. I know the tile is much easier to clean but how do you keep any shavings in place? I have often thought about tile also but wasn't sure how to keep the shavings in place. Those broodies just don't seem to appreciate the shavings do they. Even in the egg box the shavings don't seem to last more than a couple days...Hay

Hay.. I wouldn't use tile again... no reason to. The tile has yet to get a spot on it in 2 years! LOL I put a generous amount of shavings, and since they can go in and out.. it's pretty easy to keep it in there. It was nice to look at when it was empty and you could see it... but no way would I bother with that again.. I'd just paint it with Kilz or something..

I got a cardboard box lid and put a dish towel in it.. then topped that with paper towels that I taped the paper towels to the cardboard so they couldn't scratch it off... Just put it in there with a few shavings on it right on top of the old shavings.. and transferred them into that.. I'm gonna have trouble when they do hatch though.. that playhouse coop is waaay too high with a ramp.. Seramas are just too tiny to make it over the cleats on the ramp! LOL

There is one baby out there today.. a few pips too. I sure hope those broodies are good mom's.. I've been wanting these babiez for months!!
