My bird book does not show pictures of common ducks. This little guy was brought to me by some local kids for my aviaries but he will be returned to the Lake.
An Id please.
CLOSED: Baby duck from Lake Peten, Guatemala
Looking at the beak and feet I think some kind of Grebe
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_birds_of_Guatemala#Grebes
Thank you Donna it is one of our Grebes. We have a very large Lake but with few birds. Egrets and Cormorants are the most common. I am delighted to find that we also have Grebes. The birds normaly frequent the more inaccessible parts of the Lake, very sensibly.
This young guy hadn`t learnt not to come to inhabited parts of the Lake.
He/she is now much happier and back on the Lake with an adventure to relate to its friends.

Pied-billed Grebe, immature.
Resin
Resin is correct...as usual ;o)
LOL, I looked at pic's of the Pied-billed first and didn't think it matched ... but I'm learning! :)
Thank you Resin, Podilympus podiceps. We have four species of Grebes here. This species is not endangered. One of our others which is a larger version of the pied bill is endangered and is only found in Lake Atitlan.
We issued stamps calling for its conservation.
Poc is the local Mayan word for Grebe.
