Kiwano Horned Melon

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

I decided to grow this in a pot this year. I didnt start until late summer. It put on a great deal of growth and now has about 8 melons. I am very pleased and will probably do this again in the spring next year.

We gave it a small trellis as it is a big climber. You may not see them but they are all in there tucked behing leaves.

What does it taste like?

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

I got curious enough to buy some at the grocery store a few years ago when they made their debut. The bright orange skin caught my eye. The inside was a beautiful kiwi green, but the flavor was that of a very bland slightly bitter cucumber. I haven't seen them in quite a while. Maybe lack of flavor has something to do with their disappearance from the grocery stores.

Lee, let us know if the home grown flavor is better.

I do not. I will eat mine at the peak of ripeness and give an honest review.

Very cool looking!

I guess if their taste is not to your liking you could claim they were tree grenades and chuck them in the general direction of annoying neighborhood children! (Now I would never hit a child with anything, honest--a near miss would be effective--but am just now getting over having lived next to neighbors-from-hell for ten years. We moved from Illinois to Texas to get away from them. I am metally chucking mellons at those evil little snot-bubble blowing, bridge trolls even as we speak!)

Actually they look like fun to grow. You say they turn orange when they ripen? Might be pretty in a mixed border. The chickens could eat the fruit if I didn't like them. Hmmmmm.........Can you tell I'm gearing up to grow some fruit next year?????

Oh man, NEVER pick a vegetable-throwing fight with a pack of trolls. They will find far nastier things to chunk than pointy melons...

Funny, I thought they looked like grenades too. I have 4 brothers, no sisters, and I'm in the middle. Chinaberries and gumballs were the weapons of choice I was tortured with. OK, maybe I also threw a few...Good ol' grandma's house!!

And BTW, I'm a giiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirl! Janet

jujubetexas, I must be odd--I did think you were a guy.

bariolio, I suspected as much (from reading the story about your siblings)! LOL!
