I love to look out my window!

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

I never know who will be outside my window! Today it was "Roho" My BLR Wyandotte and 2 of his Buff O girls . One of them found a Banana peel in the Compost and the Chase was on!!!
How about Your Window Worlds!!!

That is a cute picture. I had chickens before we moved. I want some more but have been lazy and haven't built a chicken pen yet. So much to do I just haven't got around to it. When the baby chicks come to the stores I think "I must get that pen built" Of course it I don't put a top on it I would worry all the time about the hawks so then it seems like a lot of trouble. LOL Anyway that's my excuse for now.

This morning out of the window I saw my young dogs playing in their pen. I live in the country but too close to the road to be comfortable letting my dogs run free also they seem to like the woods then end up missing. (coyotes) One was stretched out in the sunshine, another was chasing leaves as they were falling from the tree in the slight breeze and the other was napping half in half out of the dog house. My camera is broken or I would have taken a picture.

I would love to have seen my cows out of the window but they are vacationing at the neighbor's ranch. LOL None of us seem to be able to find the break in the fence.

I see semi truck loads of corn going by at high rates of speed. Lots of dust. Harvest is nearly done here.
Our new chicks arrived today.

I sit outside with mine because of hawks

Seminole, OK(Zone 7a)

I think I read on another thread about someone ordering 300 hundred chicks because you kept running out of eggs this past summer. Would this be you CountryGardens? I love baby chicks. I really need to get my pen built!!!! I can't imagine taking care of 300 or more chickens. I always wanted a beautiful rooster but my girls always killed the roosters. I even tried trading some ducks for a full grown rooster but he didn't make it either.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

That would be me. No roosters here. Easy to care for them as we have everything real handy.
Want to help wash & candle eggs?

Seminole, OK(Zone 7a)

What does candling an egg mean?

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Amber Lee, I understand about the road and your dogs!! I could not have a big Dog for fear of it either getting hit by a vehicle or the neighbors doing away with it! I have to keep my little Chihua hua inside except for when Im with him! I never heard of Chickens(Hens) killing the Rooster!!! What Breed of hens do You have? Or was it that Your Roos were young? Sad!
Love the Vacationing cows! LOL!!
Oh my heavens County G., WOW!!!! What kind of Chicks? Do you raise for eggs and Meat?
Donna, I have had to do the same thing in the Spring! While Chicks are young, but after they get a good size on them the Hawks could care less .

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Hens for egg laying. We sell eggs at our Farmers Market.
Candle eggs. We have a can that has a bright light in it. A rubber lined hole on top. You set the egg in the hole & the light shows any cracks in the shell or blood spots inside of the egg. Only takes a second per egg. All eggs you buy are candled.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Eufaula I only let the bantys free range. Had a hawk swoop us a few days ago when I was sitting in my chair with Dudley. It headed straight up when it saw me. Ever seen a hawk put on brakes lol

Oh Yes!!! Donna ... One day I was at my back door and saw a Young Hawk swoop down , headed for the Serama enclosure, He saw me just in time to not notice the heavy bird netting on top of the enclosure!!....WHAP.. Sproi--oing----flip flop!!! He landed in birdnetting bounced with his weight and flapped around just for enough time for me to get the pellet gun and run him off! ( I was so mad and NOT thinking) After I did it I thought about what could have happened if he had been a little older.... YIKES!!!!

I love looking out my window and watching the hens walking around. I have 9 young birds that are skinny enough to slip through the slats in the picket fence. They won't be skinny enough to do that for much longer. The only time I freak is when they get into my big flower bed out front. They sure can make a mess of things. I've given up worrying about it though. When I'm out on my riding mower they like to follow me around and eat the newly cut grass.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

thats to cute Loon

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

I thought my Chickens were the only ones that did that!! I have to make sure that they are locked up good and tight before I cut grass!! I never know when I am going to run over something that might go flying and Conk one of em in the head!!

I gave up on pretty flower gardens... ( Sigh) with the Chickies free ranging and all I have to have pretty sturdy plants and ones that they just dont care for!

That is a really lovely view of your chickens out the window. I wish I could do that. I bet its so nice and peaceful to look and see them walking around and doing their chicken things.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Thanks Rita! Yep Im lucky to have a small 3 acres in the country, surrounded by trees and the Oconee national forest . I actually have neighbors close enough to hear and see them but the trees buffer most sight and sounds.
I never know what I might see out here, including deer in the afternoon and silly armadillos at night! I now Have between (lost count) 25 and 28 chickens of several breeds, but the funniest ones are the cochins . I love to watch their snowshoe Hop. the roosters....lets see..... 8 in all , have their own territories in my Yard. Every now and then someone crosses a boundary line and alll heck breaks loose. It s fun to watch but I keep a good look out for any danger or rowdyism!
Im at work right now and cant wait to get home so I can sit down in my chair and just relax with them for a spell!

I had an interesting view out my window this morning. One chicken was walking around the yard. It must have not got in the door before my husband locked the coop and she spent the night outside. She's lucky someone didn't make dinner out of her. That happens every now and then. One hen was bound and determined to roost on my garden bench on the pole barn porch. Hubby would have to pick her up and put her in the coop.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I count to make sure all chicken, yard ducks, and geese are in. If my hubbie comes in and say I locked up the ducks and geese. I say did you count them??? He says well it looks like they were all there. So out I go to make sure

No wonder he is after her. She is a real pretty girl.

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

I have one hen that "mates" with the other hens on occasion. Weird eh? Surprised the heck out of me.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

She usually tries to hide in her little tree roost

After a while Iroh gets all puffy and gives up . He is now trying to attract the attention of the Serama girls!

Loon that is normal behavior for the dominate Hen. Usually she will attack a younger Pullet to let her know who the Boss is!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

She looks like she's wondering whats going on there on her tree roost. Maybe its not easy being beautiful LOL!

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

Thanks for letting me know that Eufaula. The one she does it to is an older hen like herself. All the young pullets are babies she hatched out. She went broody and since we didn't have any roosters I got some fertilized eggs from the neighbors. They're all big now and have sort of gotten away from her so she's roaming around with the rest of the hens. I didn't know it was a dominance thing but it doesn't surprise me. She's very fierce and nobody got near her babies. :)

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Yep ..youcan only have one Queen in the hen house! Sounds like she knows her job!! Fierce and protective of her babies.... great Hen!

Oh Green , How lovely!!!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Well if you look out any of my windows you see different areas of my garden. I am an avid gardener. So no chicken views here. Except on chick TV ha-ha.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Well, Thats a window!!! It'll work!! LOL!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Any more views of the chickens grazing ?

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Ha haa! Well , here lately Ive spent most of my time outdoors working on the Chicken house so I would be the focus of anyone looking out!!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

I just love the looks of some chickens in a big grassy expanse. A field or a big lawn. I just love that picture. I don't even hardly have any lawn as everything here is gardens. I does look nice but I wish it was more countryfied with chicken room LOL!

I do watch You Tube videos of chickens out and about in country settings and pastures. Then of course I also watch my chicks here in my personal chick TVs. They just grow so fast. I am trying to immagine them as grown pullets next spring and out in the yard.

(Zone 5b)

Great picture, Eufaula! There is something very peaceful about looking out the window watching the chickens fluff, scratch and roll in the mulch. They've done a beautiful job of cleaning out flower beds and turning the mulch and soil. Sometimes I talk to them through the window and they all come running and jump up on the bench on the porch to get closer to the window. I melt, and run to get them banana's, oatmeal, or some treat.

Chickens are good people-trainers.

Come on Porkpal, it's LOVE, true love!

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

When I looked out the bedroom window early this morning I saw one of the free range roos sticking his head in the dog house to nab some dog food from the dog's bucket I keep in the dog house to keep it dry. The dog was in the house but doesn't pay any attention to the roos.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Now that is funny! Dog Food stealin' Chicken!! LOL!! Its usually the other way round!
I watched my Buffs through my window last week digging in my compost pile. I ran out to shoo them away and recover the pile , I then noticed why all the excitement.... Grubs..... BIG grubworms!! So I just raked the pile out a little and called the Girls back over and let them feast away!! Too funny!! They were working on helping me out and getting Breakfast at the same time!

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

My turtles love grubs too. So did my salamander. I give my turtles worms. You have not been entertained until you see a turtle stalk a worm. LOL
