Finally! Bloomed in the Nick of Time!

Alexandria, VA(Zone 7a)

I am so happy that I was able to see some blooms!
They usually bloom late here, but I had sprayed them early in the summer and burnt them to a crisp! :(
They finally started growing and I am so thankful I can enjoy them.
The first one is a double Pink Perfeckton. The second one is now in bloom. Its white. I will have to take a picture.

hello katrun, the brugs are very pretty.
question, did u buy them as plant or did u start them from seed?

the reason for asking is that i bought some seeds off ebay, but nothing happened.
i still have some seeds, but i need to know if they need to be harden off by placing them in the fridge for a week or so.
can u help? thank u in advanced.lilspirit1941

Katrun, You have some lovely Brugs. I'm glad they finally bloomed for you.

lilspirit1941, Brugs don't come true from seed. So Katrun's Pink Perfection had to have been a cutting. She didn't mention a name for her second Brug. It could have come from seed or have been a noid cutting.

Do you recall from whom you bought the seed? If they were fresh seeds, they should have germinated for you. They don't require stratification in the refrigerator, but do need light to germinate. Do press the seed into the starting mix to make soil contact with the seed, but leave the seed visible. You can also barely cover the seed to accomplish the soil/seed contact. Again if the seed was from this year's crop, most should germinate within 2 weeks or less. The older the seed the longer it takes them to germinate.

Keep the starting mix barely moist. You can make temporarily placing a plastic cover over the seeds or place the pots in a baggie until the seeds germinate. Start with sterile starting mix and germinate in bright light to avoid damp-off and other problems that ruin the germination rate. Seedlings can take up to 2 years to bloom, but can be less than 1.

Rockwool has given me my best germination rate, but you can use almost any seed starting mix. Don't use the small expandable jiffy disks. They can remain too wet for too long which will rot the seed.

I am glad you were able to answer lilspirits question BettyDee. Thanks, because I am lucky to grow them from cuttings! I have not tried to grow them from seed yet. I

I am still working on getting my cuttings to overwinter without rot. I purchased the Pink Perfection as a rooted planted. I have had it now I think like 3 years.
These are the only ones I have left. I will purchase a triple brug come this spring. I purchased one to early and lost it to mites. I know not to make that mistake again.

I plan on digging them up , stripping the leaves and spraying them down and putting them up stairs.( in pots) w/extra perlite.
I did that last year and kept it barely alive......I would just pick off the leaves if they grew. My house has very low light..so I will put them by the window just to keep them alive and cut back on the watering.
I hope it works again. I will trim the other one as it is to wide.
Wish me luck. I am also doing the same with my Elephant Ears. Except they will go in the laundry room where the light is bright and on all the time.

Good luck with your seeds. What kind of brug seeds are they?

Why would you pick off the leaves, if they grew?

thank u bettydee for answering, for her.
no i don't remember who i bought them from, cause they were so inexpensive.
will give it another try with what i have left.
i'm going to get one off of ebay.
again thank u for answering

I pick off the leaves because they get Mites, and I do not have enough light to grow them. I will most likely keep a few on . I purchased a Triple Brug and lost it due to mites. That was very disappointing, so I do not want a repeat. I will keep (Most of the leaves) off.
Last time I put them in my bay window and they grew some leaves. This is what I did it last year and it worked for me, so I will try it again.
Believe me I have tried to keep them alive . I have other plants and do not have enough room. I plan to take some cuttings and see if I can keep them alive without rotting until spring.

However, I will get my light out in May and get them going along with my Elephant ears if they make it.
I put everything in pots and are drying some to see how they do. I am experimenting.

Pulling the leaves off will not stop mites from getting on the plants and they need leaves to keep themselves alive. The less leaves they have, the less water they will give off and the greater chance of rot.

oh Dear! Well I sprayed them down, potted them up and brought them inside. They are upstairs next to the window. I suppose I should just let them grow again and in a month add a light. The pink perfeckton is so tall it just about reaches my ceiling.
I was contemplating if I should just water them once a month and have them go dormant. The light is not bright enough for them to be healthy.

When I over wintered some of my smaller plants they grew with the light provided by the window, however they were weak and thin.
So I am experimenting.I have my Begonias two plummies, and so EE by the window with them.

What do u suggest. I will take a picture and post. I just do not want to lose them .
They will be so tall and beautiful if I can manage to keep them alive come next summer when I plant them. How stunning.

Brugs will not go dormant if the temperatures are above the 45º - 50ºF range. If you want them to go dormant, you need to have them in temperatures that consistently stay between 40ºF - 45ºF. Their growth with slow down inside the house, but they will continue to grow. Would you be able to give them extra light? At least a two light 4' florescent light strip that is left on for ~ 16 hours. Use one warm and one cool light bulb.

I live fairly close to you in MD. I keep almost all of mine (50+) in a back room in my house that stays cold all winter. I have the regular shop lights up with plant bulbs in them. It's nice because they are still blooming right now. They go dormant in the winter once the temps stay down.. I only water them enough to keep the roots alive. The ones that I don't put in that room are in a part of my house that stays cool. These only get light if someone goes into the room, which is not that often. Both of these ways have worked well for me for years. I have only once put a brug upstairs in my house and it died. My DH keeps the heat at 70, and since it rises, the upstairs is too hot. For me, it's easier to have them go dormant.

I have my White Brug cuttings and other EE in my laundry room. Which is cooler than most..I use the back door alot for my dogs to enter and exit.
I thought about putting them there but I do not have enough room in height to keep them on the shelfs and fridge, which I have in there.

I did add a Plant light bulb to once of my recessed lights that is near the plants. I can add an additional light. I actually have a Plant light I purchased at Home Depot for the 2bulb light strip. I hang it in the ceiling on hooks and wrap the chains around the hooks to adjust the height. However I will just have to keep it all the way up. I will do that next week.
* The good news is that My Brugs are starting to grow leaves on them with the current light they do get. I do not have a room that is cold in my house. The heat is on as well here. I just do not want to loose them. I have some pots ready when the cuttings are ready. I hope to get them started over the winter..

I have friends in Bowie...I grew up down the street from there.

I will post a pic tomorrow to show you their home and current living conditions. Had 2 trees fall again here last night due to the winds. It never ends! More work
