I have had a few fruits on my Maypop for over a month. They are dark green and are not getting any lighter, or darker. What should I do?
Maypop fruit not ripening
This is the first year my fruits have gotten ripe. I think maybe because we had such an early spring??. The fruits are falling on the ground so everytin=me I walk by I pick one up and eat it. I have never tasted a passionfruit before. They are so good! I was wondering if there was anything I can make with them?
kudrick, I would leave them on the vine until it is completely dead. I don't think they ripen after they're picked. How old is your vine? Mine is 3 yrs now, maybe that's why I got ripening fruits instead of the early spring? Anyone have any ideas?
Roxanne
Well, I picked them 2 days ago and, of course, they are still green. My vine is about 4 years old and not nearly dead yet. I have seen recipes on the internet, just do a google on passion fruit recipes.
good luck!
That's strange since you are in a warmer zone than me. Mine is against our brick home, maybe there's a little more heat there. It's in direct sun all day too. The vine has gone crazy! It grew about 20 ft this year and there are shoots coming up everywhere in the grass. I have a feeling that someday I'll be sorry, but for now I love it!
rox
mine doesn't get much sun, maybe 4 hours per day.
i'm with you, rox, i love my passi!
I know this is an old thread, but Roxy helped me so if no-one has told you yet, this particular passionfruit IS ripe when it's green.
You must wait for the fruit to become heavy in order to tell. If you cup it underneath with your hand and it 'feels' hollow-it is
not ripe. Continue to try this method for about a month Roxy. It will feel heavier each time. When you do finally dare to pick it,
you'll see the inner seed flesh has turned yellowish orange and the seeds are black. This is the only way to tell-the outer fruit
itself will still be green. I hope I helped you-mine are ripening right now.
I figured this out last fall and ate a ton of fruit. It was fantastic! Thanks for the answer.
my passis aren't flowering yet so i'll have a bit of a wait for fruit!
I think they taste better than edulis-really. A very understated passionflower fruit.
The only other passionfruit I've tasted was from the store. I assume it was edulis. It was very sour, not good at all. Must not have ripened properly. My maypops are very sweet.
