Prolapsed vent Please help

Denver, CO

Claire has a prolapsed vent. We took her to the emergency vet this afternoon, but they didn't know much about it. They put in a couple sutures, but the prolapse has since come back out. They also gave me some antibiotics. I've heard rubbing honey on it can be good. Any advice?? She is not egg bound, they checked. She has in the past laid very large eggs.

Mine had that this summer and I used the honey and warm sits baths for a few days and kept her seperate and it didn`t seen to get any better so I put her back in with the flock and sprayed her butt with blue coat so they wouldn`t peck at her and now it wasn`y very long and I couldn`t tell which one it was as I have 10 of them.

Thanks I'll try the honey in the morning, along with warm soapy wash cloth to get all the gunk off. I heard that honey has both an antiseptic and astringent quality. Works kind of like Preparation H. Alas I don't know. They put this collar around her neck, so she couldn't peck at her own butt. Poor little thing, she's been through so much, and she's so patient.

Blue kote is a spray that is antiseptic and it will make her butt blue so the others will not peck at her.The cone would stress her out to much in my opinion(remember thats my opinion)I brought mine in and set her in the sink of warm water and used my sprayer untill I got the gunk off and did that once a day for 5 days and put the honey on when she was clean and put her back in the coop under a heat lamp as she would be cold and now its even colder so make sure she is warm after being wet.I don`t know how long it was before she was fine maybe three weeks.I hate it when they have something wrong with them, you wish they could talk and tell you what to do for them.Good luck!If you have a cage you could keep her in the house for awhile and it would be easier on you

Yes, how is she doing?

We've been keeping her away from Alice, and washing her little butt twice a day, and putting honey on it. She had to endure 4 months of having bandages changed after our dog attacked her, so she's very patient about having things done to her. If one person holds her and talks to her, while the other person does the messing with at the other end, she seems very relaxed. She has stopped bleeding, and except for wanting to be alone, is acting pretty normal. The honey and the warm soapy water does seem to be helping. She get's the sutures out Monday, and if she doesn't lay an egg before that, I'm hoping she'll be all right. I'm going to ask the vet for some antibiotics just to have on hand for emergencies. I wish I knew a way to keep her from laying such big eggs. If she stops laying for a while, I'm hoping she'll get the chance to heal.
