CLOSED: Some kind of grosbeak?

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

It came back! Woohoo! Now, what is it? Rose-breasted Grosbeak? Could have sworn that the one that I saw this morning had black stripes on the head. Must have just looked darker in the morning light.

I believe you have spotted a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

Ditto to Rose-breasted Grosbeak, juvenile.

If you look at your 2nd shot, the base of the bill has some slight stretching (lil wrinkle there) that's from opening your mouth wide for food...that will eventually be gone as the bird ages. That's one way of telling a juvenile from an adult.

YAY!!!!

And cool info about the bill too!

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

I was going by the warm tones on the breast with a slightly yellowish background to the brown streaks; on adult females the breast has a slightly whiter background. Might not be 100% reliable though.
