Raised Bed Gardening

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

I had to move my grow beds this Summer due to flooding last year. No telling when it will flood agains---so better be safe than sorry again.
My grow beds are made with concrete cinder blocks. I have not filled the holes up in the cinder blocks yet. I was in a hurry
to get my Fall crop growing. Plus---I had to put all my blocks and soil somewhere and I will be lowering my beds in the Spring.
Since I am in Zone 7, I didn't think i could join the Zone 8-10 community.

I grow by the foot. Square Foot Gardening.
But I did not use the Mels Mix as suggested at Square Foot Gardening website and forums.
I have all the Square Foot Gardening books and dvds by Mel Bartholomew.
I just happen to have used Pro-Mix from growing in containers and filled the beds with that.
I do have plans to add different materials to it in the Spring.
I do not grow strictly organic. I think they call this Organically Practiced. : )
I am accumulating my organic matter to add in the spring.
And I am a Vermiculite Fan cause our Summers are Hot and Dry----- but cannot always afford to use as much as I need..

My fall crop has been in the soil for 5 weeks now.
I space my broccoli and cabbage 16 inches apart and they grow that wide.
Always wondered if I planted them 12 inches apart if they would only grow 12 inches wide or
would they overlap each other and crowd each other out.

Broccoli, Cauliflower, few carrots--small plants,-------as of Oct 5th.

Do you plan to use the holes in the blocks to grow anything? I have good luck with lots of things in the blocks. Chives do great as do green onions, cilantro, and all types of herbs.

Yes, I want to grow in the holes. But I will put extra Vermiculite in the holes. I want to grow marigolds and
Wave Petunias, radishes, beets, and carrots. I already have strawberries growing in some holes in another bed
but I want to redo the soil and add Vermiculite.
I have leaf lettuce growing in the holes in my lettuce bed.
If I put a trellis on the back side of the bed-----I could put one cucumber plant in each hole or even a pole green bean.

I really think 50% vermiculite will make the holes more productive.

What a great idea, using the blocks. I have a bunch that were left at our house by the previous owner. Now I know what I am going to do with them. thanks!
